Looking like the upgrade 24-70 F2.8L MkII is still just rumours.
Cos just saw a UX05** at one of the shops. So production is still ongoing. |

That's kind of sad. Was hoping for that they replace a new model with IS.

Nice one. Plus if it had IS its price would probably shoot through the roof.

There was a rumour some time back that the current 24-70 f/2.8L will be replaced by the 24-85 f/2.8L IS. I suppose it's still a rumour. But if it's true, it'll be one of the ultimate FF lenses to have.

Does one really need IS at 70mm?
not to mention, 24-70 already heavy and dear as it stands. as for 24-85 rumour, will Canon issue something that overlaps with the 70-200 range (ie in the 70 to 85 portion)? |

and to answer your question, yes Canon will. if u want to see it from the point of view of overlaps, then isnt the rather new 24-105 an overlap? i guess because u'r holding the mentality of having the 24-70 alongside the 70-200 as a power combo, thats why u see it as an overlap. where as there are still many photogs out there who will appreciate the additional 70-85 range if for example they prefer primes in their collections, e.g. a 24-85 with a 135 f2? |

doesn't hurt to have IS. the 24-105 is good just that is an f4. if it is couple with f2.8 i think it is a lens to get man.
maybe the upgrade will come after the economy crisis...

The IS module may cost ard $0.9-1K. Weight may be 1.5-1.7kg or same kind of weight of 70-200 F2.8 IS. solid lens..... neck pain for long period of snapping........... ![]() Wish It can be materilize....... |

I just heard a rumour. The 24-70 f/2.8 will be discontinued after the UX05** batch runs out.

Given how Canon positions their lenses, it seems to me that 1. shorter lenses don't come with IS. The L primes don't get it until they hit 300mm. the shortest zoom that gets it is the 24-105 L, the focus being on the 105 end. 2. 24-70 replaced the 28-70 => is there any compelling reason why Canon would deviate from the 24/28-70 range? 3. yes, there is the 24-105 but that is an entry level L f4. It sort of stands alone as the 'professional kit lens'. Compare that with the 24-70 and 70-200 combo which as far as I can see is designed with 70mm as the cut-off point between the 2 lenses. sure many people will appreciate a longer reach of 85 (leaving aside for the moment the question of weight or any possible overlap in lens coverage) but is it in Canon's interest to create such a lens that cannibalises the 70-200mm L or 24-105L market? Nothing right or wrong about a 24-85. Certainly there will be those that welcome. But I just don't see Canon doing it. Last edited by nuanda; 30th May 2009 at 12:15 AM. |

I foresee a update year's end or next year even. And from what I was told, the 24-70 f2.8L is on allocation right now and there isn't much stock floating in the market. So maybe that's the basis for all the rumours. ![]() |
