so far only bike messengers diy their own bags..for me i just took a Targus bag and converted for SLR use. Lowepro may be good in making camera bags but Targus is much better at making bags that are comfortable and yet tough.

Its a win win scenario in my case.

Just buy a proper camera bag, give your camera best protection

just like you don't buy a Ducati and use a bicycle lock.

A proper camera bag give you good protection not the best protection, alittle personal touch would go along towards the best protection.

ie. There isnt a generic bag for a 400d, camera bag maker just bag for a range of camera.
Its the user that make it a nicer fit.

what i mean diy, does not mean you need to build the bag from scratch, you can build and improve upon currently camera or non camera bag.

a lock is to sercure an item, a bag is to transport an item. thats how i reference them

If you dun like a camera bag due to the design or bulky.
You cld buy small padded pouches to keep your lens and camera body in a normal backpack or sling bag. For camera body some buy this to keep in bag.

I have seen many so call DIY versions, for the reason of save cost or disguise, in the end either unable to provide protection, or not as convenient as the proper camera bag.

why do just get a camera bag? unless you only have kit set, than get a OP-tech pouch and put the kit set in your school bag lor.

If you want a non-standard bag I say go for it. I personally find that most camera bags are downright ugly, overpriced and a good way of saying "please rob me". I myself use an un-labelled bag which looks more like a regular backpack. In fact many laptop type bags have space for cameras which are plenty padded (I don't know what some of these guys are doing with their cameras, sounds like throwing them around the room). There are various shops in Little India selling various canvases and padding materials (French Road area) where you could either just buy the materials or most of the shops will actually make bags to your specifications, and it probably would not even cost you as much as a boring Lowenpro. Alternatively there are various places that make aluminium flight cases to your specs. as well... Be different I say.

to each his own ... personally would prefer getting an off the shelf 1 that has configurable compartment (that's the standard anyway)... the only DIY i do is adding additional small pouches to the exterior of the bag to put essential stuffs, e.g. water/towel etc

i diy-ed mine for the following reasons:

1) i don't want a bag which screams "expensive camera inside!"
2) can customise size of compartments to fit your stuff snugly
3) much cheaper than a branded camera bag ($4 bag + $2 half yoga mat +$2 half groundsheet)
4) great satisfaction in DIY-ing stuff.

bro, do u need the padded inserts to be very nice? if no need very nice, u wan use my method? i cut the foam to size n wrap with groundsheet (waterproof) n use cloth tape to keep it together. end product is such that the exterior is all cloth tape which is not visible when in bag. n the interior is the groundsheet material which comes into contact with the equipment.
