    previous trip
    D700 + 24m f2.8 + 105mm f2.8 + 50mm f1.4
    SD14 + 10-20mm
    canon HF10

    this new trip
    D700 + D5000 + 14-24m + 50mm + 105mm
    Baby

I usually bring two bodies, one with an UWA and one with a tele prime so there is very little need to change lens.

Yes, I'm planning to take an SB400 for my D40.

The SB400 is as small as it gets for an external unit.

    GND filters
    3x CF cards
    1 spare batt
    tripod (very heavy)

    need run to airport liao!

Yup, this (above) is the kit I'd like to have.

My last major trip two years ago was done with a D200 with a 18-200mm VRII.

But for now, my 'regular' gear is:
    • Nikon D40. Which reminds me.... I need to get a spare battery for the D40. Or a charger to use in the car.
    • 18-55mm kit lens with cheapo UV <<< though I'd prefer a 2.8D/24mm with this body
    • All the SD/SDHC cards lying around!
    • SB400 (powered by 2 x AA Energizer Lithiums) <<< still under consideration as the in-built flash should be enough for most
    • Vanguard tripod (for when we're on the road and there's time and scenery)
    • GPS to do some geotagging when we're on the road
    • Safrotto black canvas

Next trip is to Perth for a week, and we're driving to Albany and Margaret River (the usual destinations).

Hmm well, on my recent trip to US. I was experimenting with a few different things.

    D700 (Zooms)
    17-35
    70-200

    D300 (Prime)
    35f1.8
    50f1.4
18-200 (My favourite, best lens ever to carry along)

As well as a few Cokin screw in filters and such. Monopod I got along the way, it's really a hassle to lug around, so steady hands are a must, and a very good eye for detail. Try not to rush your shooting and make the same mistake like I did, but also keep in mind the police along the way. Some dude with a D3 and a 70-200 got kena by the police in US for taking pictures of the senator. If you want to do it, stand behind a bush!

Aha! The very setup I am dreaming of!
With a 50/1.4 and this body, available-light shooting is a truly within your grasp.

Well, some of us are, unfortunately, hooked on the instant gratification that digital provides, and are unable to face the pain and anguish of having to wait mere hours to get the film developed, and printed.

I've found myself always aspiring (even when I cannot afford it) to a newer camera, when all I really need to take decent pictures is just one lens (but it has to be a good lens)...maybe a 24mm or a 28mm....?

As I have just sold my soul and achieved my goal of a full-frame DSLR, I now face the equally daunting challenge of using the gear enough to actually justify having bought it!

Wow, the Holy Trinity of lenses!

Do you have a grip on the body? Or can you recommend a hand strap for use without the MD10?

    Thanks.

usually limit myself to 2 lenses for convenience. and only have 1 body, so everything fits into a small waistpouch. a light monopod can be strapped on top. convenient even if have to do trekking/scrambling.

    canon 40d
    10-22mm (love this lens!)
for the other lens, choose one:
    50mm/f1.4 (street/candid) +/- extension tube for macro
17-55/2.8 (same as above but heavier, but wider so can don't switch lens to shoot wide)
    100mm/f2 (if want macro)
    velbon monopod
    lenspen and cloth
    CPL
    ziplock/raincoat if rains

if got space and strength then bring everything you have lor
