    I now travel much lighter

5dmk2 with my 35, 50, 85 primes, flash... The usual spare batt, cf etc.

This is likely to change as I venture into the world of MIL

Good point. I'm trying to justify the flash. The only reason I'm bringing is cos I want to take some portraits of my friends at the Avenue of Stars. I've been there in the day before but I don't know how brightly lit is the place at night.

i think u just mount any of your lens on a tripod, shoot at f2.8, bump up ISO if necessary. that will do.

For self drive trips i tend to carry more since i am not bounded by weight in a way.

My NZ trip last yr i brought along :
    Canon 5DMk2
3 spare original batteries ( as of then, there were no chipped 3rd party batts )
    Lens cleaning stuffs, the usual
    Canon 85mmLMk2
    Canon 135mmL
    Canon 24mmL
    Sigma 12-24mm
Mirex Tilt shift adapter + Mamiya 35mmf3.5
The usual tripod, GND/ND filters, Canon timed remote that is great for shooting star trails, my Dell lappy, a souped up LowePro OffTrail 1, and a Slingshot 200 AW

My upcoming Icelandic self drive trip i m planning to bring the following :
2 x 5DMk2 ( renting one of them unless 5DMkIII pops out before the trip i might just get one to make up my Mk2 as a spare body )
    6 spare batts
    Sigma 12-24mm
    Canon 17mm TSE
    Canon 24mmL
    Canon 85mmLMk2
Canon 100-400mm ( will be looking to get one before the trip )
Mirex Tilt shift adapter + Mamiya 35mmf3.5, Mamiya 24mm FE, Mamiya 50mmF4 shift
    a PhotoGPS unit
The usual cleaning materials, lappy, bags, tripod etc ..

Depends on whether your trip needs your hands to be busy with many other things or can be free to attend to photographic equipmenting.

Most of my trips previously used to be with a DSLR, Tripod, and a superzoom (Tamron 18-200 was then the best range)
Nowadays, I've learnt to use my 50mm much better and with a bit of eye, almost everything can fit beautifully within a 50mm lens. I'll try my next trip with nothing other than a DSLR and my cheapest lens - 50mm 1.8

For my overseas trips, it's usually

    Sony A850
    Minolta 20mm f2.8
    Minolta 35-105mm f3.5-4.5
    Minolta 100-200mm f4.5
    Minolta 300mm f4
    Helios 44-2
    Sigma 1.4x tele

Plus all other necessary accessories and a laptop. It's an enjoy to use all these equipments but, not sure of other users, it's certainly back-breaking for me..

Every other stuff borrow or beg from my friend.. eg. 400mm f2.8, charger and etc..

Trying to keep my gear as light as possible without compromising too much.. well maybe taking a bit of advantage of my friend.

    With my wife and family:
    LX5

This is the best setup for me.

Setting up tripods.. compose.. wait for the right moment.. done.. (wife with a loooong face waiting.. and other family members already miles ahead of me).. :X
Bloody hell this is no way a light travel set. This is going for war my friend.. some serious war battling against everything that comes your way.. HAHA
