Default Species Recovery Programme

Quoted from The Business Times

Quote:
HORTPARK'S new Butterfly Garden opens its doors to the public today and tomorrow, where a visual feast of multi-hued plants and butterflies can be seen.

The garden is part of a butterfly species recovery programme that includes butterfly breeding and re-introducing locally extinct butterflies where appropriate.

The 150 square metre Butterfly Garden has an indoor enclosure open to the public on the last Saturday of every month, besides its two-day opening today and tomorrow. Butterfly lovers can also get up close and personal with the different butterflies in the outdoor garden, which is open every day.

New butterfly trails will be developed based on NParks' research on butterflies and host plants within the garden.

Besides the garden, new display plots have also been added, such as a Permaculture Trail where crops can be harvested worms can be seen.

Launched a year ago by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, HortPark is part of the Southern Ridges.

The 4 species that are extinct in singapore are Athyma perius pierius (Common Sergeant), Tirumala septentrionus (Dark Blue Tiger), Parthenos sylvia lilacinus (The Clipper) and Junonia iphita horsfieldi (The Chocolat Soldier). It is also featuring the Pachliopta aristolochiae asteris (Common Rose) which is rather endangered here in singapore as its host plant, Aristolochia tagala is threatened with extinction as their host plant becomes more scarce.

The "species recovery programme" aimed at spreading the message of conservation and as well as to educate our folks on the diversity of our winged friends. Also reintroducing a few species that were documented by the early authors as mentioned above that are now extinct due to habitat destruction and loss of host plants. hopefully with all the effort, these winged jewels can be fluttering around abundantly once again for all to enjoy.

The enclosure will be opened every LAST SATURDAY of the month which means that this coming Saturday 30th MAY it will be open to the public. Time will be 9am - 11am and 4pm-6pm. Please also note that the enclosure is part of a conservation/breeding project and its not commercially driven like the one at Sentosa.

Butterfly Circle members will be down at the enclosure to help the Nparks staff with their guided tours. Hope to see you guys down again this Saturday.
