Default Singapore Flower & Garden Show 2003

Orchids dominated the show held at the Esplanade

Hardly a temperate/foreign flower in sight despite the adverts

A lily in a miniature garden display

The sky was mostly overcast, had to wait for a break in the clouds to capture some shots

Love the lighting of your first 2 shots, great warmness to them. Was it shot in natural light? What film did you use?

First two were shot with fill-flash to enhance the colour as the original lighting was very dull. Provia 100F was used.

Only levels and sharpening performed after scan. These are closeup shots at wide open aperture.

Well, start shooting and scanning some slides and you will see why there are smudges and jagged lines. The jaggies are resampling artifacts.

The "smudge" as you call it is because of the incredibly shallow DOF, the part is blocked by another petal in front of it.

If you have an understanding of DOF you will understand this and why that stem can be focused and behind flower.

Your post here seems vaguely familiar to what I posted yesterday in your thread when you asked for a critique from "only those who really know". Hmmm...I why it has been deleted after me and Wolfgang commented?

It is not on the same plane. Depth of field propagates 1/3 to the front and 2/3 to the rear. The stem is behind the flower I focused on, in fact this shows a little backfocus.

The petal is indeed blocked, but it is blurred beyond recognition due to the shallow DOF. f2.8 at 30cm at 75mm focal length does this kind of magic, try it someday and you will appreciate it as well.

Here's a full 100% crop from the raw scan if you like:

Or you can view the slides at the next SEED if you wish.

The smudge wasn't blocked... it got virtually cut off by blurring. I believe the shallow DOF effect is more natual and gradual as in this case the petal didn't fold away at extreme angles.

No offense. Happy shooting.

(ps. I deleted the thread as I already got the comments I wanted.)
Wow, eyes, how come you're so "UFOly" critical. I'm sure a picture or image doesn't lie??? You're analysing it like there's some unexplanable phenomenon going on. I'm afraid you're not correct in saying that the stem in question is focused on the same plane as the rest. Hint: Study the image longer. Also, if you've shot macro for some time, playing around with the DOF, and especially where the background is messy, this is not surprising.

As for the lines being jagged, this is more to do with sharpening and resolution used that are inherent in the scanning/post-processing. Nothing unusual or abnormal in digital format that you seemed to imply.
