i just checked CANON service centre regarding this issue.
the tech says some canon zoom lens collects dusts in the inner elements due to statics. it is annoying as I have to send the lens for servicing reguarly. any advice on how to prevent this? ![]() |

i guess different lens might attact different charge. and, it also depends on the condition of the lens. if it requires more works to service, the final fee might be higher than what they quote u. |

I opened up a few of my canon lens to see how the internal works. I can't say for all the lens but for the one I played with, there is actually a gap between the back element and the front elements.
http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=51345 The last pic is the rear element, which is consistant on the 50mm and 28-105mm. Because of the gap, dust can get stuck inside. As it goes, if its air tight, dust cannot get in. Cleaning these part removed all the dust in the lens. I think the design for lenses with no external zoom parts may be different, I can't be sure. It would be good if you can get your hands on the book, "Canon lens work". Because of the design, I don't think there's anyway to prevent this. Maybe more care on exposing the rear can help but then dust is everywhere....... Hope it helps. |

I've sent my 28-135 for cleaning recently cos there is dust in the inner element. It is $80 before GST. I've also sent my 10D for sensor cleaning a few weeks back. It was free.

so ex?!... 80 bucks... so i guess it will affect the quality of the image ah, if not one will not fork out soooo much to just clean it...but it is'nt fair right??... since it is under warranty they should clean it up for us... since it is the design of the lens that allows "uninvited guests" to get in... how come 10D free wor?? |
