My friend just told me, that DSLR cams have max shutter count? It will be time to change once it reaches that number?
Anyone can clarify? What's the rough max shutter count for an entry level dslr |

don't think so much.. just shoot. Max shutter count is just a bell curve. Your shutter might go at 10 or 100,000... nobody knows!
on answering your qns, i believe entry level (EOS 400D/450D) is 50k, semi pro level (EOS 40/50D) 100k ... iirc ![]()

Life expectancy of the shutter units differ for different models, the higher end camera bodies will have more durable shutter units.
Similar to the similar to mileage of a vehicle, the more u use, the more likely it will fail. It is no exact figure but rather a mean, an estimate, since some will not make it to the number stated, some will outlast for long time to come. Ryan |

Your friend needs to know more before opening his mouth.
![]() All DSLR cameras have what is called a "MTBF" (mean time between failures) for the shutter, also called the shutter cycle life. It's basically an estimate. So if the value quoted by the manufacturer is 100,000 then it means the shuuter should last "around" 100,000, but it could fail at 50,000, or even keep working perfectly for 200,000+ actuations. If your camera is still in warranty and the shutter fails, the manufacturer will replace it for free. If it's not under warranty anymore, then there will be a small charge (100-200 SGD). But think about how long you'd need to shoot before you hit that number... :P

Like all mechanical parts, it'll eventually fail. DSLR just advertise the expected life of the shutter. If you have a compact camera that has a lens that protrudes when turned on, it'll eventually fail too.

don't worry too much about shutter count, most people will give up hobby, or upgrade to new body long before the shutter failed, anyway, if you can shoot until the shutter fail, you already make full use of you camera, just write it off or replace the shutter, or maybe it is high time for you to get a new model.

Seems like you're a nikon user? I'm not familiar with Nikon but using google, here's a thread talking about this exact thing for Nikon's, http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=306672
another couple of links, http://photogeek-steven.blogspot.com...o-geek_29.html & http://sportsphotoguy.com/shutter-ac...n-nikon-dslrs/ |

350d/400d should be rated at 50k for entry level dslr, i know people with 200k shutter count and counting. but there are 350d/400d with 20+k shutter count or less also need to replace shutter. it really depends on your luck. |

Spec on paper for shutter is just indication I believe.
I have friend who already shot 200k on Olympus E510 which is spec 50k on paper. but will it still walk but slowly.

If it broke, then it would be an excellent excuse to get new camera body!
![]() Seriously, I have seen older camera body that still functioning after about 3 years of usage, and the guy who using it is a pro. So don't worry about it. Last edited by lenrek; 28th May 2009 at 05:54 PM. |
