Yup.... one of my friends does the exact same thing....
BUT hopefully your DVD player has a much bigger screen than his does. haha...

But its best to bring a composite video source and test it out first. I've seen a few DVD players which have a composite input but the screen doesnt show anything at all...

The Sony FX850 or 870 has quite a high res screen, and some people are using this for monitoring. Watch out though, because not all models have the same resolution, even though they look similar in overall appearance.

Harvey Norman has it for around $350 which I think is pretty reasonable. Would buy one myself but don't have a solution yet for how to mount it to my tripod.

Depends what you want to use it for. If it is to check framing then no problem. But if you also want to use it to adjust focus you need a decent screen resolution on the monitor, othewise you just can't tell when you hit the mark.

The Sony monitor I mentioned has 480 lines, the Akira is probably half of that. I have doubts whether it would be sharp enough for focussing, but I suppose you could take your camcorder to the shop and ask to try it out.
