Title Race Not Over Yet, Insists Raf999.

Rafael Benitez has refused to concede the Premier League title to Manchester United and called on Arsenal to prove they are better than their recent results.

The Liverpool boss is defiantly clinging onto the faint hope that leaders United will not take one point from their last two games to retain their crown.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men are preparing for a championship-winning party at Old Trafford on Saturday against the Gunners, with a trip to Hull City on the last day if they need to wrap up the league title against the relegation-haunted Humbersiders.

And Benitez was certainly not prepared to heap praise on United just yet as they close in on equalling Liverpool's 18 league titles.

Benitez's team must sit and wait for the outcome of the Old Trafford match before facing West Brom at The Hawthorns on Sunday, by which point they could be concerning themselves with getting the four points from two games that will secure runners-up spot.

But Benitez said: ''We have confidence that Arsenal will play a good game. They have lost their last two and this time you will see a totally different team intent on proving something about themselves.

''If they do that, hopefully it will give us our chance the following day.

''What ever happens, I am really pleased that we are in this position at the end of the season. But I am certainly not giving up on the title, we must always be positive.

''Arsenal will put up a fight, they are a good team with players of quality. And because of the results they have had in the last few games, they have to prove something.

''Arsene Wenger is winner, and his players are too. You cannot lose in the way they have done in their last few games and not want to try to do their best.

Benitez also called for the league's last two weekend schedules of the season to be played at the same time, rather than just the last day is it is now.

Benitez said: ''This is a strange situation, having games so close to the end of the season on different days. It is something that should be improved in the future.

''For the last two weeks of the season, teams fighting for the title or to avoid relegation should have their matches all at the same time.

''The last two games should be the same for everyone, in Spain it is like this.''

Benitez went on to suggest that United's position on top of the pile is mainly because of the money they spend.

He said: ''When you talk about Manchester United you are talking about a top side spending big, big money on every single player. Every season.

''For me that is the main difference between the teams. You have seen that with regard to Chelsea before, spending big money.

''The advantage United have is that they have a big squad, in the last years they have spent money to improve that squad even more.

''They have spent big on top-class players, so they can make mistakes and they can change players. When we won there, they had Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov on the bench.

''We cannot do something like that. We spend too much time worrying about whether Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres can play while they can play Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, Berbatov or Wayne Rooney, it doesn't matter to them.''

He continued: ''We have done well. Clearly we are more consistent. Once we were a team for the cups and the Champions League and now we can talk about being a team for the Premier League. That is positive for the future.

''We will now continue to do our job this season, and next season it will be different.''

Let's get ready to GUESS GUESS GUESS!

    Correct Score Prediction = 3points!

    Correct 1st Scorer for LFC = 1point!

Correct Last Scorer for LFC = 1point!

Hat-Trick Hero Perfect Guess Guess Guess! = 5points!

so in any game, the max point a participant can net is a total of 10points.

    Sorting Out the Grey Areas.

1). in the event of 1-0 end result, the 1st scorer will be taken as the last scorer even though the participant might haf anticipated 2-0 or 22-0 and haf listed someone else as the last scorer.

2). the prediction is good till the Final Whistle, which includes Extra-time but not Penalty Shootout.

    TRANSFER TALK

Alonso hoping to stay with Liverpool next season

    May 16, 2009

Xabi Alonso has made it very clear that he does not wish to be a victim of Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez's summer of rebuilding.

The Reds - who saw their Premier League title hopes dashed by Manchester United's goalless draw with Arsenal - play their final away match of the season when they could finally condemn West Brom to relegation at The Hawthorns.

Then, next Sunday, Anfield will bid farewell to a dramatic season when Tottenham visit Merseyside.

But Benitez is already planning the major changes he knows are needed to improve Liverpool's chances of glory next season.

Last summer midfielder Alonso found himself being used as a bargaining tool as Benitez fought, unsuccessfully, to bring in Aston Villa's Gareth Barry.

Benitez, now with almost total control over transfers, has been promised 20million of new money this time around but just as last summer, he will have to raise any further funds by selling.

Alonso, who returns to the side at West Brom after an ankle injury, has already been mentioned as a possible source of cash, with a fee of 18m touted for his services.

But although he has been strongly linked with Juventus, Manchester City and Arsenal, the 27-year-old has again made it clear he wants to stay at Anfield.

He said: "Time flies. I have already been here for five years, and it has gone so fast.

"There have been ups and downs, but I have tried to enjoy and learn from every situation. I have developed into a much better player and person.

"A lot of things have changed for me during my time here and now I am looking forward to my sixth season as a Liverpool player.''

The Spain international said: "I have seen this kind of situation so many times in my career. It is just rumours and you can't be talking about them because there is nothing more than this so far.

"It is more important at this time to think of how we can be even better and this means keeping the good basis that we have settled on this season and by trying to go a little bit further.

"And we need to start taking three points from games when we are not at our best, this will make a big difference at the end of a season.''

Alonso has been heralded as one of the Reds' best players this season by fans and pundits alike.

He added: "It has been a complete season for me.

"I have felt good and feel I have been playing well, too. I have been very happy and want to carry that through our final few games of the campaign.

"I finished last season well and was able to continue that with Spain at Euro 2008. That continued into this season and I feel I have been at a very good level for about 12 or so months now.

"Now I have to try to carry that on into next season. It's not about what you have done, but what you have to do.''

Benitez has suggested he does not want to sell his best players, and Liverpool fans hope that includes Alonso, who received remarkable terrace support last summer when it looked like he was going to be sacrificed to raise the cash to buy Barry.

This summer Benitez will again go for Barry, who Villa boss Martin O'Neill considers impossible to retain with no Champions League football to offer.

But whereas Villa wanted 18m last summer, Benitez believes that fee will be slashed to no more than 10m because Barry's contract is running down.

He also seems likely to sign 27-year-old Croatian left-winger Daniel Pranjic from Heerenveen in Holland, where he has proved to be a consistent goal scorer.

More than two dozen players have been linked with Liverpool in the past fortnight alone, but 24-year-old Almeria striker Alvaro Negredo is a genuine target for 10m, while Benitez still wants Valencia forward David Silva, with an offer of the table.

The potential arrival of another left-winger suggests that Ryan Babel could also be sold for around 10m.

Benitez will raise further money by selling players currently on loan, including Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin for 8m, while Jermaine Pennant will be released and could join Portsmouth on a free transfer.

Goalkeeper Charles Itandje will leave, and Benitez has already raised 1m by agreeing to sell youngster Jack Hobbs to Leicester.

Youngsters like Craig Lindfield, Adam Hammill, Paul Anderson and Sebastian Leto - all out on loan - are also likely to go for small fees.

Benitez underlined Liverpool's likely problems this week when he said: "In this summer's transfer window, I feel that the price of the players is unbelievable now.

"It is very difficult for me to pay 80m, 100m or 50m, because if the player leaves, you lose all your money.''
