I know it is not a fair comparison but I tried to find and no review has done such. The reason I am asking is the D700 inherits a lot from the D3 and I wonder versus the Canon top-of-line....how does it measure up or down...
Hope to hear your comments and reviews. |

Different league altogether - both in terms of features and pricing. The D700 can be compared to the 5D2 however, with the 5D2 having more megapixels with the D700 countering with a better AF system.

Yes I am aware they are in a different league but the D700 does have the D3 features and the 5DII does not have the 1Ds features thus such the comparison.
I believe the D700 AF may compete sufficiently vs the AF of the 1DsM3 to begin with the least. |

Comparing this 2, one has a 12mp while Ds uses a 21mp.
I guess ISO performance would be better on the D700 due to the mp size, but resolution of cos canon takes the spot but provided if you really need the high res. it would be more fair to compare the D3x and the 1ds though.

^ Well the 5D2 does have basically the same 21 megapixel CMOS sensor (with high ISO improvements in the 5D2) as the 1Ds3 and a better imaging processor (DIGIC4 vs DIGIC3), with most of the features (AF microadjustment, etc) making their way back down into the 5D2 from the 1D series cameras - and let's not forget the big one (at least to some people) - 1080p30 H.264 video, which no other DSLRs have at the moment.
Sure it does not have the pro-level AF that the 1D3, 1Ds3, D700 and D3 have (or as thorough a weather-sealing as I would like), but for the type of shooting I do, that isn't much of a loss. Horses for courses really.

if you have invested quite heavily on a system already, most people would be unlikely to change system due to the cost..
if you are starting a new system, then you can go to showroom and try... but, no offence to canon users, the flash system of nikon is so much better and colours very vibrant.. (not a good method to review but this is what i see from friends' canon camera lcd and compare to nikon's camera's lcd) YMMV cheers ![]()

Compare cameras (You can review or compare sensor performance for all cameras tested by DxO Labs.)
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng...(brand2)/Canon http://m.cnet.com.au/digitalcameras/339294434.htm ![]() Nikon's new SLR leads the pack for sensor quality DxO Labs said cameras must be about 5 points apart for people to see a difference |

Looks like D700, D3 and CAnon 1Ds Mark III are not much difference in the sensors. However, I think dpreview mentioned that D3X image quality is good but not for sports, so is D700.
Something on image quality you may wish to look at: http://www.photography-camera.com/se...mage%20quality |

Since u know is not fair then the only main difference is the price and the lenses that you are having.

The 1Ds3 would win on most aspects. From AF to sensor to build-quality. The D700 would even have difficulty beating the 5D2 on some aspects as it just doesn't have sufficient megapixels to compete.
For the D700, due to its many AF points, and if just using the centre-point to AF, the AF area is too small and sometimes the AF would not lock-on. The is something that does not happen to the more primitive AF of the 5D2. One area that the D700 is better is perhaps its high ISO performance. |

![]() in my opinion: the AF system of the 5DM2 is really lacking compared to the D700 (in my opinion--pls do not start flaming) was doing some birding shots with a friend and his tracking is (you can claim his tracking method is no good, but after he tried D700 on the spot, he also claimed 5DM2 loses out a great deal in tracking) so far no problem with focus not locking due to "AF area too small" just my opinion ![]()
