Default Aperture ring settings

Just a question for those well-versed with manual SLR. I intend to use a AFD 24-85mm F/2.8-4 on my Nikon FE. The biggest aperture for the lens at 85mm is F/4. If I leave the aperture ring at 2.8, will the FE meter based on F/2.8, which will cause under-exposure, or will it automatically knows to meter at F/4?

I've turned the ring between F/2.8 and F/4 at 85mm, and the shutter speed meter doesn't move at all.

Don't worry, your camera would be able to read the correct metering. Never had any problems with my manual cameras when I use my variable aperture zooms

if you leave it at 2.8 and zoom from 24 to 85 it will tell the light meter that the aperture changed.

the camera meter is metering the exposure via TTL, it will meter at the lens effective aperture, so when at 85mm focal length, tho your aperture ring is at f2.8, but the camera meter is metering at f4.

you can simple to a test, take metering with any aperture @24mm on a plain wall, change the focal length to 85mm, you will notice that you didn't dial the aperture ring, but the exposure reading has changed.

If you look at the aperture markings above the aperture ring, you should see a line and a dot. It represents the 2 different settings on both zoom end. At full wide when set to f2.8 the line should be above 2.8. And the dot represents the aperture for when you zoom in max to 85mm, i.e. f4

Thanks for the replies! Was initially concerned about the position of the aperture ring, and how the camera reads the selected aperture.

Thanks for sharing. Was quietly wondering why the dot. Now I know.
