dear dude,
a quick google reveal that's Nikon's "Close Range Correction" technology working in the lens. it stops down to enable the crisp sharp photo edge to edge in Close Range. http://imaging.nikon.com/products/im...kkor/n14_e.htm if u move back physically, u get back your f/2.8 |

Thanks buddies. I will have a good read of all these posting on this macro lens.
By the way, I took some portrait using this lens yesterday, see posting on Portrait forum, pretty good for the eyes! unlike using the 24-70 mm the focusing on the eyes at 70 mm is too soft. Good night

in the first place why do you want to shoot macro using f2.8?
you also need to note that the aperture goes all the way to f57 at 1:1 ![]()

If I were you, I would not worry about the f2.8 aperture setting becoming f3.0. And unless you're looking for shallow depth-of-field, most macro work would be shot with much smaller apertures, e.g. f16, f22 or even smaller.
But just to address your question why the f2.8 became f3. This is cause by the effect of 'light fall off'. And this is more evident when shooting close or at the 1:1 reproduction. Those buddies who have played with 'bellows' to get extreme closeup shots would understand this 'light fall off' effect and would have compensated for it in the exposure settings. Don't worry. There is nothing wrong with your lens. Fred |
