You need to work on your lighting. It looks like you didnt use a flash?

Yes, I didn't use flash. Have a SB 600 with Stofen Omnibounce but ran out of batteries

Went to Botanic Garden today but did not spot many insects.

cool..what is the distance from the lens away from the object (fly) when u take that shoot?

Very close. Fly doesn't get scared even when you move your lens very close to them.
