different makes have different philosophy on image process.
if you take in RAW then PP, they are no much different, if you want the picture direct from camera then S5, Sony(color), and Nikon better then Canon. by the way S5 and D90 is not in same level, can't put them together for comparison, personally, i think S5 better in Jpg format Last edited by Nenjia; 18th May 2009 at 04:36 PM. |

same old advice: if u can come to the stage to compare S5 with D90, just buy D90. it may mean that the S5's main selling point is not your cup of tea.
i don't really know what is ur definition of image quality. personally, i like S5's jpeg output. dynamic range aside, color and white balance is very gd. S5 is slow, but not that slow as to piss me off. I feel that S5 is not a "everyone's camera", unlike the D90, which can satisfy most consumers. Not easy to buy a S5 now also. So, gd luck. ![]()

What is it that you are after? The Nikon D90 and Fuji S5 Pro is really quite different.

Personally, after owning S5pro & try out a D90 from my cousin, my humble opinions are as follow:
S5Pro Advanatges: 1) Good Dynamic Range and Colour with the right Nikon Lens 2) Good solid PRO grade body 3) JPEG pic & coilour very good - no need much processing 4) price very affordable 5) WB is better (my opinion) D90 Advantages: 1) Good sharpness 2) Shooting speed higher than S5Pro 3) File size smaller 4) Very good ISO performance Disclaimer: all testings and grading is based on my humble simple methods and look with 2 pairs of eyes. ![]() |

I do not own or have i used a D90, but i do own a D70 and an S5. My honest opinion is that if you want sharpness, you'll go for the nikon. But if you want colour, its definitely the S5. Speed wise is really not a concern unless your shooting moving objects. But well, you'll probably end up with a D90 as the S5 is really very hard to come by.

My take is that if you are happy with an effective resolution of about 8MP, the S5pro is a damn good camera that delivers excellent dynamic range and nice colours. But if you are looking for more resolution, then its ageing 6+6 sensor is quite limiting. I've done direct comparison and was pleasantly surprised to see how much more resolution I can get from the D300/D90 sensor with the same lens (eg 60mm micro) as compared to the output from the S5.
Another thing to note is continued support from Fuji, as it is commonly understood that the S5pro will be the last DSLR from Fuji. Rgds. |

guys .. thanx for the replies. i am happy to hear such good understandings and observations.. i am coming into the digital slr idea / world after being
used to my trusted pentax 67 and mamiya 645 with 120 film. i cant afford the d700 or the likes of high end digital but want to maintain as much of a film like feel to my work.. judging from these replies i am leaning toward the s 5.. if anyone has more input please go ahead.. thanks!! |

I grabbed mine in Jan 09 at $1.16K with a free camera bag. It is my first DSLR and I am loving it. I chose it because it is value for money. There are so many different combinations to play with to get the output you like. The colour reproduction of the S5 Pro is very natural, but S5 Pro is not as sharp as Nikon DSLRs. The S5 Pro is too slow to be used for sports photography, but is a better choice for portrait shots. I would say D90 works more like a machine gun, while the S5 Pro works like a sniper rifle. It depends on what you value in a camera.
