Thread: Shoot not niice without flash

Default Shoot not niice without flash

Eventhough I'm using a large aperture lens to shoot a model in indoor and outdoor, the shoots looked either has digital noise(symptom of underexpose), color lack of vibrance/saturation/contrast and looks like the shoots need to have a reflector/flash.

I tried to meter the face just to make sure at least the face should be properly expose but it still show the same problem. Spot metering doesn't help. The problem would be solved if flash is used.

A lightmeter was used to double check whether there's any user error in metering.

    So any idea?

you need to take note of the quality of light on your subject

Tested with indoor tungsten light i.e like the hotel/restaurant lighting, typical car show lighting.

Thus most of the above lighting should lid almost the whole subject that part of it. It's not like a candle light.

For outdoor the sun is the main light. Metering the model face or spot meter the face, doesn't really get a properly expose face( it's different from using a wrong technique in metering and end up the face underexpose).

    1. Try posting a sample so we can see what on earth you're talking about.

What Mr Ortega suggested is about Quality of light, do not get mixed up with Quantity of light.

you said you use spot metering taking meter reading off your subject face, do you shoot in manual mode or do you lock the exposure with A or P mode in the first place?

Have tried both. If it's AV then I've tried from 0 to +1. for +1 the shoots looks overexpose but the tonal gradation is not the same as using flash( looked highly contrast and smooth color gradation)

Sorry to be ignorant but can you give me an example what's quality of light?

did you check your camera settings? portraits without flash are as good as without flash, if there's sufficient natural light. just depends on how it is shot

I think the main problem is probably the scene is too high contrast, hence when you used a little fill flash, it evens out the lighting and lessen the contrast, if that is what you want to acehive... The scene that you were trying to take would probably have exceeded the camera's dynamic range.

TS seems to think using a flash is always better than without one. just trying to make the point that natural light, i.e. without flash, is also good. some people prefer natural to flash..

Err. Easy, right? I mean, most of the shots you see in the portraits section are taken without flash.

Now, some images simply would not even work if there was any flash used at all!

it depends on your ability to control the flash to ambient light ratio
