Should be the Malayan Eggfly (a dark brown butterfly with some white spots), they'd feverishly lay eggs on the poor tree once it grows its leaves. Once they finish eating up the leaves, most would be eaten by birds.
Some people transferred them to neighbouring plants or trees when the tree is almost botak, so that they might be able to survive.
