    Default Bad Buy/Sell experience

Not sure if brothers/sisters have had any bad experiences when buying or selling your used equipment but let me tell you what i experienced yesterday night.

I was selling my 4 months old 100mm macro lens, i had wanted to transact in the western area but a potential buyer said that he is quite serious about buying but he lives in the eastern area saying the western area is too far, so we agreed to meet up at Cityhall MRT.

First of all, the buyer keeps delaying time saying he is caught up with work, fine. So he was late by 30 minutes. I asked him if we could find a place to sit nearby so we can comfortably take our time to check the lens, he points to me a corner in the crowded MRT station, say we will check there, fine by me.

We went to the corner, i let him take a look at the Warranty card and registration status. Open up my box, took out the lens, first thing he said, "Your hood is not original, you never told me it was a 3rd party hood, i am not going to buy it." In the first place, i never claim that my hood was original in my post, he did not even take out the lens cap to see the lens and based on the hood alone, rejected the deal.

Based on what i saw, he was only carrying a small backpack, so i am wondering, did he even bring a body to test out the lens in the first place. And is he out to purely waste my time?

    Anyone got similar bad experiences?

these things happen all the time

there are all kinds of people in the world
you just happen to meet one kind

that is why when i sell my stuff, i will take really detailed pictures of my equipment
highlighting the flaws and all, state what is provided (picture would be better)

so that there will be no miscommunication

If he had found flaws on the lens and rejected, i will be quite happy to cancel the deal, but to get rejected not based on the main product but an accessories, i truely find it strange.

I think it's just silly to reject a lens based on the hood. What has the hood gotta do with the lens conditions and quality. And I believe everyone knows except for L, rest of Canon lens doesn't comes with a hood what.

Well if the hood is not original, it may affect the resale price of the lens and besides it was not stated in the first place that it's a 3rd party hood so the buyer would assume that everything is original. Of course, turning down the lens just because of the hood is a bit extreme. He/she could have re-negotiated instead of turning it down straight away.
    Just my 2 cents worth.

True, i did not indicate that the hood was 3rd party. The buyer just rejected and made no attempts to lower the price, therefore leading me to ponder if he was just playing punk.

if a person is truly keen, he will make a trip to the western part / punctual / .. too far and time delaying due to work is a tell tales sign already..

it could also be that ur asking price is way too high and he find it hard to reject you despite committing prior to meeting, so just meet and find lame excuses to reject..

Rejection is part of life what, he could have just sms to tell me that he is no longer interested, instead of wasting my time.

If he travel to the west to meet you and found out the hood is 3rd party. He will probably be the one starting this thread.

If he nego, you might think he want to press down the price using silly reason.

not sure, but what i know from friends is canon lense dont come with the hood less the L lense.(true or not i not sure)

you should have tell that buyer that the hood is a bonus and not part of the orginal lense package and he should be happy that u are including it in. if he go buy brand new from shop he want the hood also no have, have to fork out more $ for the hood. usually for me when selling my items as 2nd hand items, i call the person when he/she wish to confirm the deal and inform him of anything like defects/missing parts/additional to the item in question, and confirm he/she will to accept the item under those conditions. cosmetic defects are abit hard to describe and have to leave to picture or actual viewing to decide.

I believe that the buyer is a newbie and just wanted to buy new(new to his inventory) lense at lower price that buying brand new.

buyer wanting to meet up at a central area are common as both party usually dont want to incur too much $ on transport when buying something that does not grantee satifaction to the buyer.

as a nikon user, if the hood is missing, most prob i would ask for a price reduction if the miss f the hood is not made known to me in the beginning.

It's weird if u say he play punk coz if he was really out to play punk, he wouldn't have even shown up... maybe he's just abit weird that he reject yr lens based on just the 3rd party hoods... so far all those i met are nice friendly and genuine sellers... can't say the same for buyers who keep trying to bargain so much for a lens tht the prices they quote are just ridiculously low...

Maybe the original hood is hard to get? or maybe he felt that seller was not being honest with everything, there's so many maybes...

There's one way to prevent all parties from wasting their time... post the photos of the item on sale, I cannot understand why people don't take the time to post what they are selling and then blame others for miscommunication.

maybe his hood was original hood? and he expects the same from your sale? when you did not indicate 3rd party, maybe he assumes like his sale it would be original?

I've learned not to take sides until both parties tell their story, aiyah.. learn from this and move on...

I would expect the hood to be original. Most lenses nowadays come with the hood. To the extent that if the hood is not original, then it should be specifically mentioned. Some people want the entire package to be original. It can be quite a pain in the ass to try to buy a separate original hood or even an original lens cap.
I have a near-mint Olympus E-620 Underwater Case for Sale. PM me for a great deal!

For Canon unless you are buying L lens... all their other lens does not come with the lens hood by default.
