Just realised I do not have the normal lens. Price wise f/1.4 is more expensive (double the price) than f/1.8. Which one you suggest?
Thank you for your comments. |

I did a comparison myself sometime ago as i only believe seeing with mine own eyes.. The F1.4 is better in term of sharpness across the F-stops but the F1.8 is sharper from F8 onwards. F1.4 IQ has more contrast color and a smoother bokeh.. but not as creamy as Sigma
If you are in a tight budget the 50mm F1.8 is a very good buy.Last edited by Omega23; 7th May 2009 at 12:36 AM. |

Thanks for Cichlid and Omega23 for the replies. Sorry I missed that thread (http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showt...8+vs+50mm+f1.4).
I am thinking to get the 50mm f/1.4D. |

Both are excellent lenses made by Nikon. Dun need to think so hard. Get either one and you are still on the right track.
The golden question is how much are you willing to pay for a 50mm prime. If $$$ is not an issue, by all means get the one with bigger hole, f/1.4 so that you are shoot better in low light conditions. If the thought of paying 4-5 hundred bucks for a 50mm prime pinches your heart, go for the f/1.8 one. Anyway are you using a DX or FX system? If you are DX user, 50mm lens will become 75mm, which is not a normal lens already. U have to get the 30mm or 35mm prime in order to operate like a normal lens.

Thanks for your kind advise, you are very right indeed. I had learned that the DX has the 'zoom' factor of 1.5x ![]() |

Go test both out.You may even prefer the 24/28mm f1.8 Sigmas.Only you can decide what your "normal" lens is.For me,35mm on film is normal, not 50.
Having tried many 50mms, (I have owned the AF 50mm f1.8,the AFand MF 50mm f1.4s and the 50mm f1.2 which I currently own)I find that I can't justify the $250-$300 difference between the 50mm f1.4 and f1.8.Both are EXCELLENT lenses. However, both have similar IQ,build and AF speed despite the F1.4 costing so much more. The difference in max aperture is not even a full stop.To be frank, I don't think it is worth spending the difference. If you really want high speed, get the beautiful AIS 35mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.2 or just get a newer camera with better noise control.Anyways, don't listen to what I or other people say |

Hi All,
Many thanks for your comments and suggestions. Anyway most of the camera shops in SG do not have the f/1.8 in stock right now. MS Color sells the f/1.4 at $530.00. |

If you use 50mm focal length a lot, go for the F1.4 aperture. If not the F1.8 should be sufficient. I personally got the 50mm F1.4AF-D which I am using on full frame and never looked back.

my pass 50mm 1.8 is more better CA than 1.4D.
