Dude, any suggestion to choose between these two lens
My concern is, 200-270 range is not often used, and from 18-200, some testing shows Tarmon even better than Nikon, but without silence motor built in Tarmon, how is the focus speed and noise towards Nikon Cost is not concern, anyway 100 difference only |

If you plan to use the lens for a long time I suggest that you go for the OEM version.
It will definitely last longer. Having a 270mm range is very tempting but I'm sure you'll need to bump the ISO higher just to get a decent picture. |

IMHO
Tamron: nice range, good colours & IQ but slow (and sometimes) unreliable focusing speed. i had problems locking the focus (very frustrating) Nikon: super fast focusing, will not miss a shot (unlike the Tamron). Colours/IQ good enough for me. |

70mm at the long range isn't very much.

ask yourself if you really do require that sort of range. i used to think the greater the focal lengths in supazooms the better. I presently own a nikon 18-200 and will say that im pretty satifised by the colour and performance. but of course, given the range, you also suffer from picture quality.

Hi, owned both even now...
i)18-270 tamron: better rich, however, f6.3 is not too good at long reach, unless you have camera that can take high ISO. I use the 18-270mm with Canon 40D, so the ISO is good enough. With live-view, I obtained very sharp images in the night too. Image soft generally, but the reach is good. You have to hunt for a good 18-270mm to get sharper images, as the QC is not tight enought. ii)18-200mm: Better colors on my Nikon D700, but this lens is a japan-made lens, which is now difficult to find, so there is no click sound or other image problems. Paid a premium for this. However, the reach is limited. On my D700, I use the DX setting, so it gave me further reach. 18mm gives some vignetting, but this varies from lens to lens of the same type. Both are good lenses, but both have their limitations. Either one is good, but the Nikkor lenses are easier to sell in second hand market. I also have the 28-300mm tamron lens, which I also use on my D700. Images are good. See the link in www.photography-camera.com. All the best. |

Hi Ron, This is not a problem. This is the sound of VR stopping. Try listening carefully, when you doing focusing, you will hear a constant whirling sound. After you stop focusing or taken your shot, you will hear the "tak" sound in about 1 to 3 second.

After reading quite a bit and seen sample photos, I think I can safely say that 18-200 is not for those who're critical about image quality. The IQ is so-so acceptable up till 100mm and after that it degrades...
Quality seems to be get better below 100mm if you stop down till around f8-f11 but still above that it's not really good. 55-200 should have overall better IQ but you have to change lens. First, try to think whether you'll need more than 100mm frequently, i mean really in the blink of an eye, such tha you won't have time to change lens. If not, and you want better optical quality, you can take a look at 16-85VR too ![]()
