    Default Nikkor AFS-10-24 f3.5-4.5 with D5000

    Hi All.

This afternoon I've tested Nikon D5000 with Nikkor AFS-10-24 f3.5-4.5, shooting RAW all the time. Came home, and realized that none of my image processing software can open D5000 raw file.

Can anyone inform how can I open D5000 RAW files ?

PS : amateur - noob testing result (not a professional one). I'll post the image after I am able to open D5k RAW files

    1. Comes with intervalometer. Wow, even D90 does not have this. AFAIK it's only available on models above or equal to D200

    2. Improvement on speaker placement, D5K's speaker is positioned on the back of cam, near LCD (D90's speaker is on the right hand side of camera, on the handgrip side, so it's covered by your palm. I think this was a mistake in design).

    3. Accurate & fast 3D tracking (trickle down from D90/D300 yeah ?), 11 AF points.

    4. Manual focus indication a'la D60 (rangefinder sytle using exposure scale as focus indication). How I wish this function is enabled on all Nikon models

    5. Tilt screen is helpful on low angle shooting. However, upon placing it on tripod, it can only be angled 90degree from vertical position. Because the joint is blocked by tripod's QR plate.

    6. Matrix metering tends to underexpose (according to my eyes & histogram. Need to have exposure fine tune / setting.

    7. Video mode is similar to D90 .... 720p, as usual comes with jello effect (which other model does not ?)

    8. Ergonomic : fit for small hands. A little bit too small for my hand (I am comfortable with D90, D200, D300)

    9. D5k has two beep mode (one beep mode in D90)

    10. Built in flash has no commander mode (as per spec)

    11. No top LCD, I prefer top LCD to quickly check setting.

    12. I don;t know how to remove eye cup. Wanted to change it to circular rubber eye cup.

    13. Lotsa in camera RAW processing mode .....

    14. Screen orientation is changed automatically upon tilting the camera vertically (a'la D60)

    15. LCD screen resolution is not that great, especially if you're accustomed to 920k res LCD. A little bit more difficult to check for sharpness.

    16. Nikkor 10-24, is not pixel peep'd yet. Not yet comparable. (was tested together with Tokina 12-24 f4, Nikkor 24-70 f2.8, Nikkor 50 f1.4). Certainly : wide wide wide, no vignetting (was not using filter then).
The front elemen extremely bulges, which is worrying if you're not careful. Better spend some for nice thin filter.Lens length varies from 10 mm to 24 mm, minimum lns lenght is achieved on 15mm.

I am quite frustated with Capture NX2 : slow performance (processing with Compaq 6910p, intel centrino duo 2GHZ, 2 GB of RAM), and I'm unable to process even single RAW file with it.

Every times it shows "rendering" status, the application is suddenly closed.

Is there any other software to process D5k RAW file ?

    I hands-on the D5000 in a shop yesterday.

Was quite disappointed with the tiltable LCD because it is unable to tilt into an angle such that I can take pictures with my DSLR hanging overhead and myself viewing from below.

Good try from Nikon though. Hope to see more tiltable LCD nikon dslr in future.

Yes I don't like Nikon Software. They are slow. Anyway you will have to wait for the adobe raw updater

Are you sure you tried it out properly? You are mistaken, good try though.

Okay folks, finally I can convert D5K RAW files using ViewNX.
Converted to JPG via View NX, add watermark via LR2. No other post processing applied.

Pardon for amateur - noobish - wanabee testing. The following photos are mostly taken by Nikkor 10-24, some with Nikkor 24-70 f2.8, a little bit of 50mm f1.4 AFD (manual focus) here and there.

To test out the 10-24, I captured scene with Aperture priority mode, varying the aperture from f3.5 to f22. You can see the variety on the flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahandre02/

Here, I only show you the aperture which I think best to represent the scene (you may think otherwise).

My opinion on 10-24 : 3.5 corner sharpness is so-so, best on f5.6 / f8 onwards. Vignetting does not exist (no filter mounted) on D5000.

    Test :
    1. Nikkor 10-24 - Mould Mount
    - 10mm @ f16

    2. Nikkor 10-24 - Logs - 10mm @ f5.6

    8. Nikkor AFD 50mm f1.4 - Xiao Gui Lin - f/2, Aperture priority, manual focus via rangefinder function (somehow it looks like D5000 can meter using this lens. When I change the aperture, shutter speed changes accordingly, can anyone confirm this ?)

    9. Nikkor AFS 24-70 f2.8 - Green Bean - f/2.8, Aperture priority.

Yes, all lenses with CPU can meter with the D40/40x/60/5000 family, just no AF. In Nikon-speak it is AF, AFD, AFS, AFG and AIP. I think.

You can even use non-Ai lenses if you do it manually.

No metering on AI lenses, works perfectly otherwise.

No AF on AF, AF-D lenses, but metering works.

Full compatibility with AF-S and AF-I lenses.
