Default Canoscan 8800F

I just bought this scanner to scan my 35mm after reading lots of rave reviews on it...

but i'm a super newbie to this kind of thing. Can anyone help me, what settings should i set to achieve a good resolution for printing to at least 5R or 4R? I heard 600dpi is more than enough, but if i set to 600dpi, i must set the length and breadth of output also, am i right?

if so, what dimensions should i set it to? i understand that 4R means a 4:6 ratio, so should i set output size as 4 inch to 6 inch?

By the way, if i send my film to those printing shops to scan, what settings do they use to scan ah?

600 dpi for film is not enough, at least 1200 or above for 4R...
if scan at 600 dpi, output file's not enough. for better 4R print is 1 megapixel or above...

thanks for the advice. What output size should i scan to? 4" by 6"?

if i scan to 4"by6", the output will be (1200X4)(1200X6)=17.28 megapixel worth.

so i assume that when you say 1200dpi, you're talking about scanning same dimensions of the 35mm film?

Hi, if you scan at 1200dpi of the film dimensions:

(1200dpi x 36mm) length x (1200dpi x 24mm) width,

will give you an approx 1700 x 1130 pixel image which is almost 2 MP image.

The "output" is a general setting which will automatically set the image size for printing.

which means that the output dimensions are not determinant of the resolution, rather it is the dpi that matters?

So if i scan in 600dpi to 4" by 6", its the same as scanning in 1200dpi to 2" by 3" right? Only the default printing size is affected, is my understanding correct?

if u select "600dpi" in the resolution and output is 4" x 6", you'll get a 600dpi 4" x 6" image.
