Default The E-3 at ISO 3200 (with a little help from Noiseware)

Low light, ever changing stage lighting, action sequences... all challenges to the E-system, I'm at about 30 metres from the stage but with the E-3 and the 12-60mm lens, not only did the camera manages to focus all the time, in fact the white balance works out pretty well too, the colours came out very nicely. At ISO3200, the images are actually not bad, but it is even better after running it through Noiseware.... I'm very pleased with the results.

Hey, that is very good. I never got such great results on ISO3200. Maybe I am not using the right processing. Of course, perhaps, u shot in RAW?

Not bad at all. I've used ISO3200 maybe only once on my E-3. Haha! Nice photos!

But can tell it's a high ISO pic, due to the colour degradation and lower DR. For example, the black doesn't really look like black. Looks like grey.

Olympus is definitely going in the right direction to improving colour and DR, especially at higher ISOs.

Yup, it's the Hong Kong Disneyland, and this is a very nice show. It's my first time shooting under such conditions, so I'm really pleased with the results. These are jpegs after running through Noiseware. Ever since I realised how good the Olympus jpegs were (from the time I used E-510), I've mainly shot jpegs, shooting RAW only when I feel there is a real need.

Man Utd won 2-0 at Middlesbrough! The Premier League title is staying at Old Trafford!

I have quite a few shots at 2500ISO and there is plenty of banding.

quite amazed at your pictures.

i learned to avoid banding by turning Gradiation to Normal then Contrast 0. if needed, just apply Shadow Adjustment after shooting, i get better results that way

Personally, i would find the photos except for the first one lacking detail, likely enough to be noticeable even at 4R print size. The noise removal and the loss of colour and edge definition on ISO3200 has been pretty heavy... As much as i like the olympus system, with the technology currently available to us, i would still avoid anything above ISO 1600 for the time being.

I went to the lion king show as well and it was pretty tough to shoot there as the dancers were energetic and constantly moving. This is not a comparison of photographic skills and i would just like to share what are probably better settings for that lighting condition. I was using E-520, 40-150mm at only ISO 800, in order to avoid heavy noise and the banding issue albeit at slow shutter speeds of only 1/40 to 1/60, so i had to time my shots carefully to shoot when the dancers slowed down. I did some light noise removal to get these:

Those are pretty good shots too.

You know, in future, unless we go alone or with friends, we should concentrate on watching the show instead of taking photographs, the Mrs was most unhappy with me fidgeting with the camera and snapping away instead of watching the 'romantic parts' with her... but we will never learn, won't we

Nope, she has to learn. Want total attention, then dont bring us to those places.
Eat dinner with us where we have to use both hand on food (eg KFC) so we cannot take photo. LOL

HAHA!!! Excellent idea!

But those with E1/3 can still use their cameras, just need to wash under running water with soap later....

Hi Spidey

Thanks.

HAHA bro totally agree we'll never learn. But luckily my gf is very patient with me taking photos when we are travelling, since she has been "trained" by her dad who is also a fanatic photographer But sometimes have to give and take abit lah, it might be more relaxing for us to just enjoy the show instead of seeing it thru a small rectangle..

Hi Morgan,

You can find Noiseware from http://www.imagenomic.com

If you're using Windows, they have a free community version for you to use.

Have fun!

Hoho,

wow impressive, still thumbs up for the E-3
Mm but the noise was supressed pretty well. Wonder if Olympus can go any further in NR.

Cowz.
