I'm very careful not to make comments like 'Brand A makes better flashes/lenses than Brand B', especially if I don't have evidence to back myself up, because these comments start brand wars.

renting equipment to test is a valid point to make. It was one of the things I was considering when I thought of upgrading. However, I did find it to be expensive. Imagine if I rent D90 + lens for 1 weekend, and then 50D (or 500D) + lens for another weekend. Then what about the other brands? ~cough cough~ not within my budget. Can't tell when looking at a computer screen. I know Nikon can produce some equally fantastic results.

Much prefer the subject matter in your first pic though. Phone number? Lol

IMO not an impressive choice (to showcase L lens) at all...but i dont think many wld complain.

    Canon 500D + EF-S 17-85 (doesn't come in package unfortunately): SGD$1992
    Nikon D90 + 18-105 lens package: SGD$1814
Nikon D90 + 16-85 lens package: SGD$2243 (really pushing my budget...I want a nice Manfrotto 190CXPRO3/4 or 055CXPRO3/4 tripod too).
Nikon D5000 doesn't come with a lens package except the 18-55 lens which I don't want. Price would be virtually the same as the D90 anyway with the 18-105 or 16-85 lens.

Yep. Really need to sleep on it I think. Also need to go back to Cathay Photo and have a good hold of the 450D to see how well I can tolerate the ergonomics.
If $$ is part of your concern, you may want to check the sticky thread for the price list. You can get better price for certain items in different shops. also, you may ask for eQuote (from CP and MS) for latest price.

MS and TK also offers quite competitive price, compare to CP. Of course CP is locate in a convenience location. But sometimes, it is just different by SGD20 or less....

    *sigh*

Been reading up on lenses. I was originally thinking of getting the EF-S 17-85 IS USM if I got a Canon. Unfortunately, that lens is really being thumped a bit in reviews (7 years old, due for replacement, not fantastic quality especially for its price etc). The only other alternative I can see as a walkaround lens is the L series 24-105 F/4. But on a crop body I'm losing out at the wide end. Then I could go and look at possibly getting a 17-55 F/2.8 IS USM coupled with something else to fill out the range, but it's starting to get expensive (and at that focal range, I'm not sure how much lens changing I'll be doing...I don't want it to be excessive).

Nikon's 16-85 lens gets much more favourable reviews than Canon's 17-85 (well, it is 6-7 years newer, lol). But then there's no nice F/4 range to choose from if I want to slowly upgrade my gear...it looks like I have to go straight to the 'holy trinity' which is just too heavy and expensive.

Third party lenses don't appeal to me much either...I don't want to give up IS/VR and Ring USM/Silent wave motor.

    Help?

Get the whole set 2nd hand. If don't like still can sell off without much losses.

I find Nikon's 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 (the old D70's kit lens) quite good. It covers the focal range I would need as a walkabout lens. Metal mount too, unlike the newer nikon kit lenses which use plastic. But it's still not so 'solid' like the canon 24-105L though. It's lighter! but it has no VR.
    Exploring! :)

    Nikkor Lens Plasticky??
Well newer Nikkor lens have excellent sharpness and superb build quality.
Especially the Nikkor Zoom Trinity, they are actually better than Canon f2.8 zoom trinity.
A must buy for financially gifted photographers.

When I tried my friend's D90, it's actually a pretty good camera. Whereas the 18-105 kit lens that comes with it seems a bit slow on focusing. So you might consider get a D90 body + Nikkor 24-70 f2.8.
I'm looking at a different perpective of life.

What about Nikon D90 body and 16-85 lens? 24-70 is limiting the focal range a bit.

Have looked at some second hand options in the forums here. People are asking just as much (or not much cheaper at all) for their second hand cameras as I could buy them for new online. I really don't understand.

Seems you have more or less make up your mind which to choose, mate.

So why not just try the combo out at the shops?

Brothers here can give you their advice but it's you who are going to use the cam and the focal length of the lens, which differ for different shooting scenerios...

    hi TS

a vy long newbie thread. lol. anyway TS. seems you are more inclines to Nikon ( i may be wrong ). the way i see it here either you head down to your friendly camera store and have a go at the camera and lens of your choice and try it out. or rent the camera and lens of your choice. i personally would have gone for the second one. i rather spent on renting then jumping the gun and buy the camera/lens due to good review and end up regretting and selling the lens at a lost.

    cheers

Just because they ask for a certain price doesn't mean they won't take less
Some will probably inflate the price cause they expect bargaining.

Thanks to all for their advice, I am *slowly* starting to make up my mind.

I'd really love an ideal walkaround lens along the lines of 17-85 in focal range. Unfortunately Canon's model is aging (and not really highly praised in reviews) and Nikon's is a bit slow at the telephoto end.

If I went Canon, I'm tempted to get the EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 IS USM (L series optics, just not the build quality) and an EF 24-105L F/4. It's an expensive option, and I really would have preferred to throw good money into a walkaround lens to save the hassle of changing lenses and carrying 2 around. From what I can see (please correct me if I'm wrong, pretty much all lenses in the 17-85 segment are a bit slow at the telephoto end.

If I went Nikon, I'd probably get the 16-85 lens but where to upgrade from there? I don't want to go straight to F/2.8 (I don't want to go there at all...it's just too heavy). Canon have a lovely group of F/4 lenses in their L series range. Nikon don't seem to have a range like this in their product lineup.

I know Sigma have some good all-round focal length lenses available, but they lack IS/VR. I really want IS/VR.

So from what it seems to me, it looks like Nikon have a better all in one lens, while Canon has (in my price and weight bracket) better individual lenses as future upgrades. All purely subjective of course, according to my needs, budget etc.

Has anyone had to choose between a better all-in-one lens or better lenses at specific focal ranges? I really don't know what to do.

    Tamron has 18-270 with VC
    Sigma has 18-250 OS

My advise use the kit lens first, then decide later what focal length you need/shoot more often.

For me, I sold off all my long zooms, 28-300 and 70-210 as I realised I do not need them at all as I am shooting mostly indoors!
