Default Charity Work In Batam, 2004.

We went on a trip with a Catholic church, and within an hour of boat trip there are actually poor people that needs our help which we have forgotten. Having very poor living conditions and the concept of "Work to Earn", they need to be re-educated and be situated in clean environments.

Equipment:
Leica M6
Summicron Lens

Our arrival
We were welcomed with children lined up and they were singing songs.

Flea market starts
Placing a huge canvas on the ground, we scatter our clothes, just like a flea market, These villagers will gather around and pick their clothes and purchase on the spot.

Living Conditions
These people live in wooden houses which they built on their own, without clean water or any proper hygiene. Rubbish could be seen everywhere.

Lonely Street
These wooden houses are not permanent, as the Indonesian government has laid out a housing estate for them with proper living conditions. All they need to do is to find jobs and build their own houses by purchasing the materials brick by brick.

School girls singing
We were once again entertained with these girls singing songs that were being taught by the school.

Muslim children
Most of them are Muslim and education are provided by the government. But not all get the chance to attend school.

Woman with child on the way to the flea market
We sell our used clothes cheaply to them, by practising this demand & supply method instead of donating, they will understand that they need to look for a job instead of begging for money or supplies.

Yea, I love B&W but i wished i had brought some color films. All shot in Kodak Tri-X Pan thus the noise effect. Done it on purpose.

great work for the photos n charitable works.

i wish i could bring along my son there to show him how fortunate he is.
of course, also to teach him the value of sharing.

Lovely Tri-x, even though my favourite is still Neopan

I'm glad that being a non-christian hasn't stopped you from travelling with the group to help out in Batam!

Nice job you did there. Both charity & photography.

I learnt something new today that instead of donating, you sell them cheaply so that they know the value. My thought is that getting a job is tough & even worse now.

The problem with donating to these countries is that almost all of the time, our goodwill never reach the intended cause as they get "filtered" which is very sad.
