Yes, Canon have this "trade-in" program. Trade-in items need not be in working condition. And it need not be from DSLR to DSLR. You can use a PnS camera to trade-in for a DSLR and the trade-in price is quite high. Call their service hot line and tell them you want to do a trade-in and they will give you a number to call (lost that number, else can provide )

Only thing is, you need to bring the item to the service centre and confirm your deal there. Once deal confirm, they will place an order and you go back there to collect once the stock arrives.

Hope this helps.

You can do a trade in at the service centre, their lingo for it is "Privilege Purchase"

I just did one for a D500. They have body, Kit 1 and Kit 2 available for purchase. The discount is about 21% off RRP across the board for all models but for PNS trade-ins, not all DSLR models are available for privilge purchase.

So you got 21% of RRP of 500D and value of the camera for trade in off? So good?

The camera used for trade-in must be PNS?

No need. Any Canon spoilt camera will do. Of course as mentioned by slackerlism, a better camera will give you a higher trade-in discount. Eg, PnS maybe 15% off, dslr 21% off. You need to check with them to get the actual discount rate.

Let me clarify. Based on my experience so far it is 21% off RRP, because asked the pricing of 6-7 models and compared the quotes to the RRP. Prcoedure is this - I give the PNS camera I am trading in to Canon, and choose the model i want from the list of available models (it can be a PNS model or a xxxD model). They will quote a price.

So if RRP for the model is say $100, the price quoted will be around $79.

I have never used a DSLR for the trade in, only PNs so far. Model is A70. Confirmed verbally with the staff at CSC that any Canon PNS model in any condiiton is acceptable.

A70 is way back in time where PNS is up to 3.1mp. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, it's been very helpful. I'm planning to trade my 400D body and see if I can upgrade to a 40D or 500D.

Why don't you sell your 400D and use the cash to top up on the new camera? For 400D, I don't think the 20% off RRP will be worth the trade-in unless your 400D is spoiled already.

Previously asked for trade in of old D30 (the old 3mp one) to 5D (Mk I). They quoted $3k, down from $3.6k RRP (!)
But subsequently no more such "deals", they don't have trade in for the 5 and 1-series anymore.
