Which Model Canon 1D for Action Sports Photography

Looking for input from Canon 1D users.

I am mainly in to Sports photography with emphasis on Action Sports/Wildlife. At present I am using a 40D, which gives me upto 60 frames in a single burst in JPG mode, but cant do as much post processing with JPG, as I would like to, while only 6 frames in burst when in RAW.

I want to be able to capture more movement whether it be a person running, motorbikes, cars, people shooting handguns in IPSC style shooting, more into the action of the gun, such as cycling of the slide, ejection of shells, stopping the action etc ...

So based on experience from users of the 1D, which model should I be considering.

Anything from the 1DMkII (which means the MkII, MkIIn and MkIII) should do the job fine, as the MkIIs have at least 8fps, and the MkIII has 10fps continuous. I'm not too sure about their RAW buffers, but you can check out their detailed specs at DPReview.

According to the specification of 1dmkIII:

JPEG Type (Large): Approx. 110
RAW Type : Approx. 30
RAW Type +JPEG Type (Large): Approx. 22

All the 1D (not 1Ds) series are designed for sports photography.

All the 1D series are equally capable.

Even for the battery draining old 1D, it produces beautiful pictures and the file sizes are much easier to work with.

Well of cos, the 1D is only 4MP, but has the fastest shutter speed and x-sync speed of 1/16,000 and 1/500 respectively.

Thanks for all the informative replies.

Guess next step is hire a 1D Mark III and test it with my lenses and check with the Minister of Finance for funds!
