    Default Which lens for protrait?

    Hi all!

This is my first post here.

I've a 450D with kit lens and after 5 months of usage, I've found that I'm into protraits. Any recommendations as to which lens I should get?

    Thanks!

In which way does your current lens limit you in taking portraits? What do you need that the current lens cannot give you? What have you tried to overcome limitations.
Asking generic questions will only brings tons of personal and biased recommendation (some might be even good). But if you take time for thinking you'll learn along the way and you can make a reasoned decision.

    Hi,

I've heard of 18-55 but not a 18-75. I'm still new to the DSLR arena so pardon my ignorance.

Get the affordable 50mm f/1.8. Should cost only SGD 150. Around there.

    Try EF 50mm f1.8 or EF 50mm f1.4.... for 'longer' reach, EF 85mm f1.8.

    For general purpose lens.... EF-S 17-55mm f2.8

    Define portrait?

If i'm after head & sholder shots with normal perspective...i'll use short tele lens circa 85 - 180mm.
But most of the time i'll use prime 135mm...if space does not allow then it's either 50mm or 85mm lens

Gives me & subject comfortable working distance & great image perpectives...but hey...18mm or any wide angle lens also great to portray the subject's surroundings, what he's doing or for a distorted perpectives...

    But that just me...

    What's your budget?
How about the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM or EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM?
They are great, and pretty popular with those who are into portraits...

Whatever is your cup of tea. Even kit lens can shoot portrait. Some prefers primes, but you can do pretty well with the 17-55 or 70-200 etc. Personally I use 35, 50, 85, 135 for it due to shallow dof and low light capability, etc.

Yo, the most common portrait lens are 50mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 being used. Do u have any budget for urself? Market price for 1.8 can cost u only 150 and below whereras 1.4 will cost u around 600 plus. It is also good for indoor portrait shoot. Nice Bokeh too. Hope this help.

    depends on what you want,

something more intimate, or something more environmental

portraits , what do you mean? you can use anything to take a portrait, from 10mm to 300mm or more. i've seen good and positive examples of that entire range, perhaps even longer also can.

Hi guys thanks for all your response!

I'm looking at both head shots and full body shots.

But I can't seem to get those bokeh I see in pictures on this forum.

My budget currently would be below 200. So I guess I'll go for the 50mm prime.

Looks like 50mm Prime is the popular choice.
