Default Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM err 01

Hi guys and gals,

pardon me if this is already been discussed. please to point me the newbie if so.

Any canonians know about my 20D err 01 when i use this lens? the camera just freezes and works only after i took out the batteries from the grip.

i will hate it when this happens if i were in a critical project and would like to know your opinion. Servicing? cleaning the lens and camera contacts? so far it only happens with this lens which made me a bit square.

unfortunately i got the lens as used and it worked perfectly then. I dont know whether the error happens during a specific situation.

really appreciate help guys!!

Err 01
- Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts.
- Clean the electrical contacts on the camera and lens.
- Use a Canon lens.
- If the instructions above do not solve the problem, please contact your nearest Canon Service Center.

ok thanks bro.. will do.

Some forums did mention doing that and hopefully it will be ok and I also just hope that it won't be an intermittent problem.

I dread going to the service center...especially when they mention $$$ to fix it

just wondering about other Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM users that encounter the same problem and did what CS Tan has told me and still has the problem.

What a coincidence! I just sent my 17-55 to CSC for the same problem. AFAIK, the problem could lie either in the lens or camera, but much more often in the lens.

Try a test. With the 70-200, shoot at full open (f/2.8) and again stopped down (say, f/11). If the lens works fine full open but not when stopped down, that means that the diaphragm is not closing properly. That was the problem with my lens.

Repeat the test with another lens to confirm that it is indeed your 70-200 with that problem.

Hope this helps.

PS: Repair of the lens cost me $160.
