Taken at the Clubsnap & Nikon Singapore Wildlife Photography Shoot/Workshop 2003. First attempt at bird wildlife photography.
Effective focal length = 600mm x 2 x 1.5 = 1800mm!!! ![]() ps. Thanks to all the CS and NPS volunteers who made the event so successful, and for being patient in answering my many, many questions. ![]() |

Hi sfhuang,
Nice first attempt in using super-telephoto lenses. But you will probably need to adjust the level or contrast a little to brighten up the picture (to be closer to the actual event). Besides having better reach on distance (or small) subjects, super-telephoto lenses have the ability to keep the main subject sharp and rendered the background/foreground out of focus (due to shallow depth of field) with proper handling techniques. If you like the effect (and in case you missed the super-telephoto lenses too much), similar results can be achieve with shorter focal length lenses such as 85mm or 70-200mm zoom on nearby subjects through control of aperture and working distance (between the lenses and subjects). In another words, you can use bigger aperture or shorter working distance or both to achieve out of focus effect with shorter focal length lenses . Either way, photography can be fun! Glad to hear that you have enjoyed yourselves and the event was successful. In case you are interested, I have posted two shots in NPSS website taken during the event. http://www.naturephotosociety.org.sg...umID4/245.html Cheers. ![]() |

Sai Khoon, thanks very much for your comments and advice. Really appreciate it. Your pictures (as pointed to by the URL) are splendid! So are many of the other works on the NPS site! One thing I found out during the event, nature photography is really one of the most difficult types of photography to engage in. It does require lot of patience and skill.
I am now thinking of whether to join NPS or not, to get more opportunities to go for events like this! cheers, sfhuang |
