I have a Canon, and just started to pick up something about strobing. The Canon flash system is giving me fits though.

It's easy enough to work around the system. Get one of those cheap Phottix PT-04s, slap on a cheap manual flash with some light modifiers, work in manual mode and you're good to go!

Well, it's inferior in many respects compared to Nikon's CLS (in fact I haven't met one area in which it is superior).

1. The E-TTL metering changes from shot to shot even though the settings, subject and conditions didn't change.

2. Wireless flash is a pain. ST-E2 allows changing the flash ratio, but not the flash output. It also doesn't allow 2nd curtain sync. It's design and functions are old compared to Nikon's SU800. No ability to trigger external flash using build-in flash.

Sigh, was actually thinking of moving to Nikon, cos the CLS and SU800 is so good!

For strobing, I prefer manual settings cause once you get the settings correct you will get the same results everytime. This makes it simple and straight forward. My brain can only take so much of info.

A review of the new PW over the old one.

True. And if you use more than 1 strobe, for crosslighting for example, eTTL won't work either.

Harrynkl, what list are you referring to? Like who uses what strobes/wireless triggers?

But I was reading McNally's book, the Hotshoe Diaries, and he seems to use TTL even with a large number of Speedlights.

I'm new to this game, so am a little afraid of setting my flash manually. I generally shoot on the move, so not much time to fiddle with settings.
