Default Auto Exposure Lock problem with STE2

Just wondering if any of you here are using a Canon 40d, or similar bodies. When I shoot light and outdoors I use mostly Av with the * button for AEL and then half press center focus to recompose to take the picture, with spot mode on.

Recently I tried putting the ST-E2 on for similar purposes and to aid in AF-assist in low light but the * button does not work any more. Instead it works like a FEL although there is really no flash coming out, hence the exposure goes all wrong. Does any body know the solution to this? Any luck with the Custom Functions?

    Thanks you

Custom Function IV 3-1 switches the shutter button to AE lock, so you'll have to use the AF-on button for AF..
