I have shifted from 400D+ 50mm 1.8 to A350 ( twin kit 1870 and 55200).
Though am very happy with this change, but miss the ultra economical 50mm 1.8 lens I had with 400D. Got that for 120 SGD and it was superb for potraits and gave excellent Bokeh. Looks like sony too is going to come up with some nice 50mm 1.8 -- I hope its as affordable Canon version. |

Welcome to alpha mount. You can always try to find the old Minolta 50/1.7 for $200+ in 2nd hand market. The new upcoming Sony 50/1.8 is going to be the same price as the Canon counterpart, at least according to rumors.

Welcome to Alpha ...
For the minolta, if you are lucky, you can even get it at $170! You can also search in http://www.alphadslr.com too =)

You can wait awhile to the rumour "50mm f1.8". I guess Sony will produce it because there is demand and old Minolta 50mm f1.7 seems not too cheap, if compare to C and N.

Yeah, just waiting for that perfect 50mm 1.8.
I already have 1870 and 55200 to cover all ranges, 50mm 1.8 will become my default portrait lens and for great bokeh |

50mm F1.8 is not a rumour. Sony has officially announced it. Just wait for it to be mass produced.

Is the 50mm f1.8 from Canon one that is constant 1.8 and can't be stop down?
I have seen one of my client brought to the studio the canon 50mm f1.8, and to my surprise, you can only shoot at f1.8 only... can't be stopped down. Guess Canon making it so cheap that they won't put any mechanism on it.... just plastic body around the glass. I am sure Sony will be produce similar thing soon... But it is a nice little lens... well, Canon do make that kind of lens... it has no aperture blade at all...
In Minolta world, you will be perfectly right... stuck aperture blade... |

The normal photos I took with 50mm 1.8 ( in Auto mode in Daylight) had F4. Trust me Canon 50mm 1.8 is a fantastic lens and can easily be stopped down. But thanks for a healthy laugh. |

I can assure you that this will become one your most treasured lenses. I was considering the minolta 50/1.7 but bit the bullet and bought the 1.4 instead. And I'm glad that I've made that decision ![]() |

Uhm... interesting... I guess there are 2 version? as it is first time when i see that, it really amaze me that this lens even existed.
I do see one without the aperture blade... was playing around with it for a while.. and no, its not a rumour as I was using it. But it is interesting anyway.. Hart |

there are some Minolta 50mm F1.4 in the buy and sell part, for about 350, i think the lens is really worth to buy. Cheaper than the Sony 50 F1.4 (520)
