Thread: SX10 IS 58mm UV + Polarizer filter = Vignetting

Red face SX10 IS 58mm UV + Polarizer filter = Vignetting

    Noob of me.

I ordered a 58mm filter adapter and a 58mm UV filter from Lensmate.
Tried taking pictures and all was fine.

Not satisfied, went to buy a 58mm circular polarizer filter and tried them on with the UV....

    and saw Vignetting!

    Solution: Should I get a step-up ring?
    1) To what size should I step up from 58mm?
    2) Which filter should I step up? A polarizer or a UV?
    3) Can anyone sell to me cheap cheap?

    camera + 58mm UV filter + step-up polarizer, or
    camera + 58mm polarizer + step-up UV filter?

    let me reiterate: noob here
    Appreciate any input.

    simple, fundamental solution,

use one filter at a time, do not stack filter unless you have valid reason to do so.

Hi thanks for your input. Is it not recommended to use a UV filter in front of a polarizer? Thanks.

^ Yep, especially if you have a wide angle lens. I get the same mechanical vignetting (only worse) if I stack my CPL filter on top of my UV filter on my 17-40.

very not recommended. not only vignetting, also more ghosting and flaring.

Wow sounds pretty good advice. No UV filters in front of my polarizer

There is no use for stacking the UV filter in front of the polariser.

Other than mechanical vignetting, there will be other associated issues of stacking such as an IQ drop, flares. .

Optics is as good as the lens itself, so use the filters when necessary.

Get a thin frame UV + thin frame Polarizer should overcome the problem but will cost.

generally slim filters don't have front threads. so no.

Hi, you can try the circular polarizer lens.
However I recommend you also get the hood from Lensmate.

It seems my SX10 IS with the default hood can take quite good pictures, compared to pictures taken with the CPL that can't be used with the default hood

new sx10 owner here, got a question...

why did you get the 58mm lens adapter for?

    ur solution.
    don't stack the filters.

imagine u r trying to breath, too many layers of filters makes it harder
