Default Lens for nikon f55

Hi,

I'm looking for a new AF lens in addition to the Nikkor AF 28-80mm F3.3-5.6G bundled with it. Basically wanted to have more zoom to shoot objects indoors and outdoors.

Anyone can recommend?

Thanks!

Main difference is that the D lens has an aperature ring and the G does not.
The build quality of d lenses are generally better then the G ones.

But both are great lenses nethertheless.

Hi there,

For those who uses F55 or F65, its advisable to use only G lens, as these types of Camera only work good with the "G" Lens, since it has no aperture ring or so call cpu lens. its not advisable to get a D lens aor any other lens as it may not work well with it. You may get "F--" on your LCD.

That shouldn't be the case, AF/AFD lenses should be compatible with all Nikon AF bodies.

The 55/65 only has problems with VR as it will not work.

For AF lenses there are 4 categories:

1)AF: The oldest major series of AF lenses(disregarding the F3AF) will work with all AF bodies
2)AF-D: Addition of distance chip that helps in 3D Matrix Metering and Distance flash.
3)AF-G: AF-D lenses without aperture ring, has limitations and compatibility problems with older AF bodies.
4)AF-S: AF-D lenses equipped with Silent-Wave Piezoelectric Motor, nikon's equivalent of USM.

That happens only when you do not set the lens aperture to minimum (largest number normally highlighted by it being etched in orange on the ring). One it is set to the smallest aperture and locked off, the body will be able to index of the lens properly.

By the way, this problem happens to all the bodies, even on my F5 when I forget to set the aperture ring to the right position when switching from "manual" to "aperture-priority" mode!

For a beginner like me, shall I get a G or D lens? D lens provide better quality pics?

How much would a AF 70-300 D second-hand cost? Understand a new 70-300 G is around $300...

Thanks!

A new 70-300G is below $300. (I think you got that price from nikon singapore's pricelist. Cos that's the MSRP) Most shops should retail much lower than the MSRP stated.

70-300D is btw $500-600 new I think. The 'D' has 1 ED element and aperature ring, so it's more expensive.

Thanks for the info.

What do you think of this lens --> AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED?

Still confused whether should get a 'D' or a 'G'

IMO its a "all rounded" lens for travel lens. You get this, you don't really need anything else when you travel....

Its a good lens to start with. As for whether to get a G or D lens. If you don't have a manual Nikon camera and not thinking of getting one anytime soon, the G lens would be fine.....but if you are thinking of going fully manual in the future, you might want to invest in a D lens.....of cos costs should be a factor in your decision....

Hope this helps.

IMO, get the 70-300G. The optics are surprisingly good as compared to it's price, though the build is quite plastic.

Get a Nikkor 50/1.8 AF-D lens and zoom with your feet. This is about $175. It's f/1.8 is able to allow many shots indoors handheld w/o flash. A zoom lens is pretty much useless indoors w/o flash, much less a variable aperture one.
