i do agree we need a army to protect ourselves and we are able to build bond in ns...but with the current system and ppl...it will only make ppl hate ns...y? coz we are treated like cheap labour than a human...in ns we basically have lost our human rights in short...
It is how you look at NS.

Are you saying what you learnt prior to and after NS are all of good values?

Are U saying that you can fight a war without training? U only need them during emergency. But if you dont train them now, it will be too late..

So what are the treatment you think you should be getting.... if you strongly feel that there is ill treatment, voice it out.

I think there are some unscrupulous soldier out there who abuse and missue their authority. However, these happened everywhere! If they dont treat their soldier well, during emergency, the first to be short will be these soldiers and by their own ppl!

The saying.. To have peace, prepare for WAR.

if one is used to the "abuse" by higher ranking staff in SAF, at least it keeps us mentally prepared if there's ever war and we become POW..

i have a cousin who's a recce..and he was telling us about the POW part of their training..we can look back and laugh at the experience now, but should the real thing comes, at least we have a picture of what's going on and how to react.

Only those who had gone through the POW training know what it is all about. The rule is simple. If you fail this, the chances of you being appointed as an army officer is almost zero.

i haven't gone through it myself yet but i personally think so what...its two years....if i didn't have to do it i probably wouldn't...but since we have to do it as citizens then might as well get the most out of it....

and plus from what i've seen, alot of singaporean kids these days are wayyy too sheltered...everyone handed to them on a platter. NS will/should give them a kick in the rear and a reality check.

Nehh now a days NS is a cake walk for these singapore kids. I swear I seen junior ranks men talk to their officer "like friend that can joke and pull fun at the officer" my time we will go to detention barrack if we do that. My time OO is not accessible but now I like they are petty busy. With king coil beds, internet access and the new 3rd generation army officer that say please to their order.

I am glad to have served my 2.5 years. I learnt a lot of flowery terms in different dialects/languages, how to act blur when I am lazy and how to move fast when the need arises.

Did NS serve me well? I say a definitive YES. Back in the 90s when I was send to work overseas and that country was undergoing major upheaval. I am glad that my training allowed me to stay calm when the order came to evacaute. Those that had served NS helped the whole team move decisively and we got everyone home.

Eventually, I got a watch to show for my efforts (& the yearly income tax deduction too) - that watch's compass also got me out of the snow blitz when I lost my way driving in Germany.

So go serve and the experience will repay you many times in many different ways.
