What are you getting the lens for?
Tamron SP AF 17-50 F2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical A016 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16 - 80mm F3.5 - 4.5 ZA These 2 lenses have differences of zoom range and F. I would believe, CZ should be sharper than Tamron (I don't own it, but since it carry a CZ brand, I think it should be sharper). But Tamron has F2.8, so should be easier to use in indoor and low light condition. |

The CZ isnt really much sharper than the Tamron, both are as sharp as each other.
As for price, the CZ is 1.1k retail and tamron is $600+ And you get wider aperture with Tamron too. The only downside is tamron has much shorter focal range. |

Would like to give some personal comments.
You got the 18-250 and you got the 50mm 1.7 Pherhaps you should think of the use you required and walk-about lens that you intend to always carry around. I have both lens same as yours and basically thats what I carry around. Low light and Focal Length both covered. But of coz, both lens that you mentioned, are fantastic lens. Depends if you wanna carry more than 2 lens around.

I have CZ1680, but still considering to buy tamron 17-50
The only reason is f2.8 better for indoor and lowlight environment (and also plan to mate it with sigma 50-150mm f2.8)

both are very good, but the differences will reveal after sometime of usage ...
for tamron copy, servicing and repairs will be done in Japan, shipping to/fro Japan factory will take about 1 month, resistance to wear and tear is not so good, but u can take care then it's ok.. picture quality is good but on a closer look not so good as cz copy for carl zeiss, optics is much better than any other lens in term of clarity, sharpness, colors etc.., carl zeiss lens is about to capture "in-depth details" of subjects, only drawback is being f3.5-f4.5 but not an issue if bokeh is not a need and lights are ok... many owners of CZ 16-80 are upgrading for CZ24-70 f2.8 SSM which is faster and being f2.8 Last edited by Exposure; 23rd April 2009 at 09:44 AM. |

for the tamron the IQ is pretty soft @ F2.8 and you'll need to stop down to F3.2-F4 to get near the zeiss level of sharpness which falls into the aperture range of the CZ 16-80.
anyway F3.5-4.5 is still usable for indoor shooting but just boost up ISO to compensate for the slower aperture
