    Default Software to shrink images

Is there a free good software that can shrink the image without compromising the image quality? I tried using MS Paint and it is horrible. The sky will have some distortion sort of banding like rainbow. And lastly, i would need to shrink quite a number of images, so batch editing is needed.

IF you are using GIMP, you can install the free plug-in David's Batch Processor.

    Try Irfanview.
You can get that free at download.com:

lots of options when batch processing > batch rename, resize (many options for this too), sharpen, contrast, colour depth, etc.
