Your thoughts on Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO

I've searched and read reviews on this lens, most say its an OK lens, better than kit lens. But AF a bit slow. Got a few say its no good and not worth it.

I'm asking becos I am getting this 2nd hand from a buddy in this forum later and would like to know more about it before I commit.

I've saw some of the threads on this and seems like everyone says its a good starter lens however some say if you get a bad copy its really bad. So i wanna ask bad in terms of what? Focusing issue or general sharpness or AF slowness?
