Default Can filter lens be fixed on the OM lens?

I posted this thread on the "Olympus" section but no1 replied. So I deleted the thread and try here. I hope OM users can clarify my doubts. Thanks

I juz got myself an OM lens 50mm f/1.4.

I wonder can the filter lens be fixed on the OM lens?
Is it 49mm diameter?
Is the OM lens suitable to be mount wif the filter lens: e.g. Will the quality be degraded a lot if I were to place it on the OM lens compare to Zuiko lenses nowadays? Or is btr to be w/o?

as said by some people,no matter what kind of filter you use,be it the best or worse, there will still be some form of image degration.

Any lens with a filter thread can be fitted with a filter, look on your lens, should have a cirle with in line pierce through it with a number behind, that is your filter thread size,i know the OM50 f1.8 is 49mm,not so sure about 1.4,that have to let Egnaro answer.

anyway bro, your question not only to OM users, but anyone, hope this clarifies any doubts you have

thanks spidey

I know it will suffer a degradation.
My degradation referring to will it affect a lot compare to Zuiko lenses nowadays cuz of the different glasses elements inside.
e.g. If i were to put a filter lens on a Zuiko lenses nowadays, it suffers 1-stop degradation. But if I were to put the same filter lens on the OM lenses, it might suffer 2-stops degradation due to the design of the glass elements.

I saw the filter thread but it seems to be diverged out(cone-like), not like the shape of the normal thread u see on the Zuiko lenses nowadays.

What do you mean by "filter lens"...there are filters, and there are lenses, but a filter lens? Unless you mean a closeup filter/diopter. What you mean by "filter lens" may change the answer.

i don't know what you mean by your example of one stop degradtion on the digital lenses and 2 stop on the OM lens, but there are cases which i've read here that when using filters,it caused the picture to be softer

Most OM lenses have 49mm filter thread. Some like the 135/2.8 have a 52mm thread. If you mean whether you can fix close-up filters the answer is yes but of course there will be some image degradation.
Hope this helps.

If you mean filter, yes, use 49mm filter. I have an Olympus UV filter on one. You can use any 49mm filter.

If you mean close-up lens, you'd be better off using an extension tube.

It's the same thing, Hoya Digital Pro series has UV as one of the models. B+W has F-Pro UV + Haze, both MRC (multi-coating) and not MRC. MRC can reduce flare for lenses that don't have good coating, or don't use hoods. I think all filter brands have UV as their top-selling model ...

"correct me if I am wrong UV filter is mainly use for Older lens(like OM lens)"
- a UV filter is essential for film cameras. Camera, not old lens, because one can still use old lens without uv on a new dslr.

For digital, I still use UV filter for protection of lens, whether cheap or expensive lens. It's easier to clean, that way I never touch the lens. In a way, the lens never will degrade from scratches, cleaning marks, dirt. Now for some advertisement ... whoever buy a lens from me knows it was well-protected

But, read this guy's experience on filters, for digital :

thanks for the response.

Mikefellh:
a piece of glass wif filter effect = filter lens (tat's abt English le... haa)
cuz if i said filter only, it can meant a lot of thing... a sever is also a filter, in electronic > low/high/band pass filters r called filters

clubgrit:
thanks for the explanation.

If that's the case, than you should be saying photographic filter or lens filter instead of filter lens, and since this is a photography forum, and you're asking about fitting a filter on a OM lens, obviously the contax would refer to a photographic filter rather than other forms of filters

On a photo site such as this people will assume filter means a thin attachment you screw on to a lens like a UV, polarizer, ND, or other effects filter, unless you're talking about Photoshop at which most people will assume a filter being a plug-in for that software.

When you stated "filter-lens" it could have meant a thin closeup/dioptre filter, or it could mean a heavy wide angle or teleconverter that screws onto the filter thread (which aren't meant to be used on SLR lenses).

THAT is the reason for the request for clarification.

Mmm,

I too have a query bout OM lens. After checking around, I've found out that the 50 f1.4 has a 51mm slide-on hood. Hmm, any idea how/where to get one?
