Strobist question: Diffuser needed for off-cam flash?
I was just wondering...
Usually for flashes, many photographers like to use diffusers to rid of that harsh look on faces. But I noticed in many sample shots for IR or radio off-cam flashes, no diffusers are used. Even by pros.
Is it cos they wanted to achieve hard lighting from the sides so that the subject will be more 3 dimensional?

it really depends on the style and look you're going after.. hard, soft, wrapping, gelled, muted, snooted, whatever floats your boat..
