    whats the difference between a 580EX mk1 and 430EX mk2?which is btr?

    Check the specs at Canon website, that will tell you the difference. Which is better will depend on your purpose and setup. For a beginner without special requirements the 430EX is fully sufficient.

    but for around the same price , isnt it btr to gt the 580EX mk1?cant find specs for 580EX mk1. overall which is btr for mostly travel shots and group shots?

    Think for travel shots the 430ex is better, cos the size difference between the 2 is significant, depends on whether you want to lug the big 580ex around.

    but will the 430 be enbough for a group shot of about 30++ people?using a 17-40 with it.

    Wah 30+ pax ahh.. 3 wedding tables heh. Guess in this case you're better off getting the 580ex then. If not it might not bounce off the ceiling that well, cos with 30 pax you probably won't be standing that close to them, even with a wide angle lens.
