Removing tripod collar

Does anyone know whether the collar for the 300mm f2.8 can be removed? Its certainly not at all like those on the 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 or 150mm f2

I would want to leave it there even if i can remove it. Because the lens is SO heavy.

You wont want to handheld and shoot with it.

Sorry I did not answer your question, i am telling you base on my personal experience with the lens.
