Default help with u/w casing, Canon G10

Hello,

I decided it was time to merge both my hobbies However being new to U/W photography, im not ready to splurge big time for a casing for my dSLR.

Is the Canon G10 able to take nice photos underwater with a lighting strobe?

Also, what casing should I get? Anywhere I can read up about it? Most places are pretty vague else they are hardselling their type of casing.

Thanks in advance!

HI!

well there is the canon's housing, about $340 at Oceanic Focus or scuba cam or most of the camera shops.

Then you have all the other 3rd party housings like ikelite/patima/10bar which cost more then your camera itself. These however, you can only get at oceanic focus or scuba cam i think!

These are great investment, as they are less likely to flood as compared to the canon housing. the difference between the canon housing n the 3rd parties are.
1. canon housing 40m rated
3rd parties 60m-100m
2. canon housing has no flash sync port to external flashes.
most, if not all the 3rd parties have it.
3. Canon housing & buttons are plastic, and pretty filmsy springs
3rd parties range from stainless steel spring/buttons and thick polycarbonate or aluminum housing.
4. last but not least, 3rd parties housing comes with option to add on wet lens to enhance your macro/wide angle capability.
- i think there's an adapter for canon housing, but you need to get it separately.

5. price range from 600-1000usd

It's really up to your budget

hope this helps

To me, a housing is just a case for me to take my camera underwater & I want it to be as cheap as possible.
Introduce u to this guy, who takes wonderful photos with G9 & recently G10, with Canon housing. http://www.edvineng.com/ But his gallery not updated with the G10 photos yet though. Have seen them in other forums, they are great! He has an adaptor for macro lenses...

Edvin's pics are up on his multiply site and facebook a/c. There's an adaptor for the canon G10 housing to add macro wet lens. Ed has also fashioned a DIY Dome port for his housing and the wide angles are pretty good for his Fak Fak trip.

Well, you can get Canon WP-DC28 casing at $280 at MS Color, AMK hub. The problem with Canon casing is that it does not have knob to allow you to control the camera Control Dial, should you be in Manual Mode. However, a not so glamour way is to assign the function (preset F-stop and Shutter Speeds) to a button.

In manual, have to use both hands to change the settings... No sweat.
