I think you need a larger image and tighter crop for the ants.
What camera and lens are you using? Flash? Tripod or hand-held?

Canon 40D with 28-135mm

Flash is used only for the ant picture. No tripod is used for all pictures, all are handheld. Lens at 135mm and manually focused at minimum focus distance.
