Hi GD, there are many cameras for you to choose from in the market...

For a small hand-held A-grade HD consumer camera... go for the Canon HV30 ($2000)

If you want a camera that you would'nt need to upgrade for afew years to come, go for the Canon XH-A1 ($4900 - I'm personally using this for 2 years already)

I would recommend others for starters, Panasonic and Sony has some pretty neat cameras like the Sony Z7 ($14000) and Panasonic HVX202 & P2 Cards ($10000)

All the cameras I recommend all shoot in HD, SD (Standard Defination) are so yesterday... no point buying a SD camera and then upgrading to HD later.

All the above cameras are pretty decent and to be honest can make you a living if you pickup the trade of a good videographer.

You can check out my works of the XH-A1 at www.fps.com.sg

All the best in hunting for the right camera for u mate.

Regards,
David L

I would suggest you take the money you have budgetted for the video cam, and try to find a videographer who can make your video for you within that budget. You just need to think a bit about what you want (the videographer can also contribute here) and let someone else do all the work. The results should be much better than what a newbie will get on his first attempt, and let's face it, for your friend's wedding you only get one attempt so don't screw it up.

Just my opinion.

Hmmm. True. Besides the camera works, you still have to go past the editing stage. (both technical and the hardware/software requirements if u r shooting in HD) Why not make it one step at a time. Get a videographer and you can learn from the side (from him) as well as he works.

Then again, you might want to consider renting your own gear and tagging along. Sometimes, the best responses are reserved for people which the subject knows well and you are definitely in a better position than a stranger-paid-videographer.

I brought the Sony VX2100 months ago and used it on 5 weddings. I am pleased with its low light performance, LCD, manual controls, built in lens cap. Sony camcorders could be a good choice for home videos... overall, a good camera for the price.
