It does show that the CZ24-70 is the superior glass, but do a little experiment, by taking the SAL18-70 close up photo, apply Smart Blur filter in PS CS3.
Amt: 90% Radius 1.0 pixels Remove: Lens blur. And U can attain a similar visual edge contrast made by the CZ 24-70 shot.

Also shows the superior micro-contrast associated with Zeiss lenses... look at the darker lines in the cloth textures.

However, depends on your needs, no doubt CZ has definite superiority over the kit lens, but if you just need casual shots like me, then paying at least 20times for the cz seems too much for me to take...
As it does not mean CZ quality is 20times better...

Very true. For daily usage kit lens is good enough. It is also much lighter.

My comments may have triggered lots of anger amongst all the cz loyalists...but i just want to sound out my thinking as a normal consumer point of view...but for those pros or perfectionist, of course cz is the only way to go...

probably a fairer test would be CZ 24-70 vs 28-70G.
the test is pretty unfair to the kit lens as the CZ @ F5.6 is within it's 'sweet spot' while the kit lens is shot wide open @ this F stop unless you're trying to put across your point that the kit lens still performs ok when shot wide open. also remember that every bit of detail resolved will come in handy when doing image crops

When shooting with flash or good light, most lenses looks about the same. Should try @ low light ( not night photography ) with the biggest aperture. CZ will "shine" the details especially in the dark area while the kit lens details almost not there.

TS thanks for sharing, and taking the time to compare.
No doubt, the CZ lens is superior compare to the kits lens, especially if we pixel peep. If you can afford, just go for the best. If you cannot afford, the kit lens will still help you to capture the same scene with less details. It is really no big deal. ![]() Of course, I know owning Carl Zeiss or Leica lenses will make one feel good. ![]() |
