Default Can 3 in 1 printers support film scanning?

Hi, i used the search engine and found : This

which says there isn't any, but i would like to double confirm. And if i were to get a film scanner now is Epson v500 a good choice?

Thanks everyone!

Thanks lordpain!

actually i did my own research last night and i found quite a few. But i have no idea which is better. Some are out for 2 or 3 years already. But their younger brothers [newer printers] don't support film scanning so i am still kind of lost.

PIXMA MP988 is new. Why don't you bring your own film down to the Canon showroom at Vivo City to try scanning and printing?

Thanks for the reply! Was actually thinking of getting the Canon 8800F [or Epson V500] if the quality isn't good. But since it's as good i think i'll just go for the all in one.

I think the MP988 supports only 6 frames at once? & it doesnt scan medium format

8800 can scan 12 frames at one go.

Epson V700 would be even more

Eh? The TS didn't ask for medium format film scanning leh... anyway he is looking for a "3-in-1 with film scanning", which the MP988 does nicely. So it's up to him to try at the showroom and judge for himself...

Yup yup. I'm looking for a 3 in 1. Cos i need a printer too.

I'm heading down to the showroom later this evening/night. But any idea what's the core difference between the MP970 and MP988 so that i can keep a look out?

Medium format scan is not a need but a good to have for me.

I'm a female btw. ^^"

the difference between MP970 and MP988 are WIFI, 6 ink cartridge and
a grey ink for printing better black and white photos, but the price difference is quite
a lot to me.

So... more importantly... are you happy with the quality on either the MP970 or MP988?

Actually i am quite concerned over the ink cartridges. Will 6 inks use up faster than 7? Which costs more in long term?

MP970 - PGI-5Bk [S$25.90], CLI-8C/M/Y/Bk/PC/PM [S$22.50 each] = $160.90
MP988 - PGI-820 BK [S$20.90], CLI-821 BK / C / M / Y [S$19.90 each] = $120.40

*bold == retail price for ink cartridges.

I'm fine with the quality. i tried the 300dpi film scan [was told it will take quite some time if we choose a higher dpi] on the MP988 just now.

I am definitely going to get one of them. But i am still torn between both.

MP970 = Cheaper. Great bargain [$200 difference. A LOT cheaper!]. Ink cartridge more expensive. Size bigger.
MP988 = Cost more. Lesser and cheaper ink cartridge. Smaller in size. With Wifi.

Anyone know which is a better buy for long term use? I am not intending to change soon. Not till this one dies off. @.@

Eplus.

*edit: btw, THANKS ALL! XD

From what I understand on the Canon website:

- Both printers uses dedicated black inks for text printing, so no worries about document printing wearing down your other photo/colour inks

- MP970 uses photo magenta and photo cyan, which basically tends to run out faster than other inks because of the lighter density. However, they do create better gradation of colours in your photos

- MP988 uses gray inks, which is useful IF you print monochrome photos as it gives you purer b/w images without colour cast

- Other functions of the two printers remain largely similar for your purpose (scanning film and printing photos)

So... if you are printing monochrome photos often, get the MP988. Otherwise, the MP970 will deliver great photos at $200 less! Do note that the photo inks have the tendency to run out slightly earlier than the other inks.

P.S: The advice to scan at 300 dpi is only valid for scanning prints (and only if you do not intend to enlarge the scanned photo size). If you are scanning film, you need to scan at at least 1200/2400 dpi for a proper 8R enlargement. Sounds like very high resolution, but that's only because of the small area of the film compared to a 4R photo for example. You should end up with a 12MB to 18MB image file size. For any modern computer, it should be able to handle it quite easily.

This is a really helpful thread. Just an observation - I think the posts have done a good job outlining the differences in PRINT abilities, but are the SCAN abilities the same?

I personally would not be printing much but i have a box of old negatives waiting to be scanned .. .

Ah, thanks thanks. Just to check, would the MP970's ink use up a lot faster than the MP988? I'm looking for long term use and i'm afraid of the price i have to pay for the inks later. @.@

Sorry for all the trouble and thanks again.

Ink usage should be slightly more for the MP970... I don't think it's significantly more...

As for the question on the scanning, I believe it's the same on both machines based on the web info...

Thanks again Neo!

I'm gonna do some calculation soon and hopefully i am able to get myself an answer soon. Lol. [Still worried about ink issue. =X]

Eplus.

*edit: i just went to sim lim and found out the ink for 970 is actually 13ml and the ink for 988 is 8ml. Now i'm leaning towards the MP970. Still in the midst of finding a good deal.
