Default Any comments on Minolta 70-210 F4 beercan?

I planned to buy the Minolta 70-210 F4 beercan. I read some reviews about the lense and it is said to be quite nice except its weight.

I had the kit lens sony 75-300 F4-5.6, is the beercan much better than the kit lense as in sharpness and color?

Thanks!

Hello. Welcome to the Alpha family.

The beercan is heavier than the 75-300mm but the quality is definitely better since it's a constant f4 lens and you can even shoot wide open with this lens. I simply love it.

This is the lens Minolta developed after making one for Leica. So, it's definitely a very good lens and at the price it's selling now what more can you ask for.

From what I heard, this is a good lens. Worth the money to buy (if you have one that is in good condition).

Take a look at the recent shots taken by one of our bro:

Just OT abit, if I use the beercan with a200 on a tripod, will it be too heavy and damage the mount for long term usage?

beercan is 700grams
A200 body with batt say 600grams
= 1.3KG

normal range of ballhead load is max 4KG
still very safe range.

Nono.. i didnt mean the tripod ballhead but the metal mount on A200, because usually 70-200 lenses uses tripod mount.. so i was wondering if the beercan can do without it..

Ooh Beercan, my favorite lens next to 135mmf2.8. Very good for portraiture and can use for F1 too..for a price that is much cheaper than C's 70-200mmf4.

sample shots

BBB...got one at B&S at a good price

A great lens with bokeh/colour/sharpness tat not much Minolta lens within the same price could match.
Only thing is tat it dun really perform under low light.

Lately, I just realized that Minolta used the same optics for 70-210mm F4 MD and the 70-210mm F4 beercan. They just changed the mounting of the inner optics.

Yes, heavy due to metal barrel construction

Hi, thanks for these amazing pics. I tried to post to buy one but there are no replies, eager to try this great lens.

You mentioned you bought from "B&S", I am a newbie, what's that place?

I beg you pardon for a low light statement. Below pic is taken during the Earth Hour and to me, the result is quite amazing
