bump up the iso since 50d has good high iso noise level...or use a tripod

If you can get reasonable sharp photos on your 18-55mm at 1/25s, you can do the same with the Tamron.

his 18-55 has IS while the tammy does not

btw just train yourself to hold your camera still

1/25s is still ok

sometimes i shoot at 1/15s handheld

Some people just cannot do it. I have a friend who has handshake problems in spite of personal training by a professional photographer friend. It's like in the army? Some people will always bobo no matter how much training they get.

I find holding a camera and holding a rifle to be very similar. Hold the camera close... find a comfortably relaxed yet sturdy pose...breathe out... hold breath... and shoot within 4 secs.

Ha. I've overlooked that. Well, you can try doing so with IS off, I suppose.

I have frequently shot at 1/15s with the Tamron at 17-24mm. No issues there. I don't think I can do it at 50mm though.

The focal length you use would also affect how long the shutter speed you should use as a rule of thumb.... 1/focal length.

If you are at 200mm focal length, 1/15s is a long long time, and more likely to get a blur pic than at 17mm focal length.

In anycase, practice, practice, practice your hand holding of the camera...

Should be no problem at 17 mm, I did my Sigma 17-70 in HK for 1/6 sec shot and its look OK
But for 50 mm you need to have support or your hand is super steady

if you're worried about camshake, just open up your aperture to 2.8 to increase your shutter speed. you gain a lot of shutter from f/4-5.6 if you open up to f/2.8.

When using a low shuttle speed, one effective way i've tried is to activate the timer function & hold ur camera steadily while waiting for ur camera to auto-shoot.
